What Do You Know About Antioxidants?

16 March, 2010 (06:24) | Nutrition | By: Samantha Jackson

Antioxidants are familiar to any health conscious and informed person. We read about them as beneficial in keeping us fit, healthy and young looking. We also know about free radicals; elements responsible for the degenerative processes such as aging and ill health.

Children and adolescents are still in a growing mode. Their bodies are dedicated to making use of energy from food and nutrients to build itself and grow itself. All this energy goes into creating a functional adult that is capable of performing the tasks expected in life. During puberty the body develops the capacity to make babies and it grows stronger and more knowledgable to enable it to work.

When we reach our early to mid twenties, our bodies reach a peak in rejuvenating capabilities. From this point onwards the process of decline through aging begins. There is no static point at which aging starts neither is there a hard and fast rule as to how quickly or slowly the aging process takes place. It is possible to use antioxidants to delay the onset of aging and to maintain the optimum performance of youth. Antioxidants confront free radicals in the system and reduce or prevent their degenerative effect on the body.

There are three main ways in which the body avails itself of antioxidant properties. The first way is to produce antioxidants itself but unfortunately, this ability becomes increasingly compromised as we get older. The body largely relies on antioxidant replenishment from food sources. It also makes maximum use of antioxidants that are absorbed through the skin in a healthy environment and through topical applications.

To ensure a diet that is rich in antioxidants, you should include as much raw or lightly cooked fruits and vegetables as possible. Eat a variation of freshwater fish and seafood. Food that has been artificially treated with chemicals should also be kept to the minimum. Avoid too much meats, saturated and processed fats and heavy carbs such as wheat products and refined sugars. Eliminate smoking, spirit alcohols, and concentrated caffeine.

The Key To Maintaining Good Eye Health

13 March, 2010 (06:01) | Nutrition | By: Samantha Jackson

Maintaining optimum eye health can be achieved by ensuring the eyes get regular exercise and have access to a nutritious diet. As with the rest of the body, visiting an eye specialist physician should form a regular part of your annual schedule.

You will enjoy good nutrition for eyes if you observe a balanced diet. Today, the term ‘balanced diet’ has come to be represented by a fare of supermarket staples. If you do get lots of vegetable, fruit and fish products from the supermarket, you will have a varied diet but you may still not enjoy optimum health or excellent eyesight. This is because most supermarket food, although bright and fresh looking is not as power packed nutritionally as it may look.

The problem is that supermarket food is often contained in very persuasive packaging. You may feel that you are getting lots of omega 3’s in your diet because you regularly purchase the most expensive brand of fish fingers that has ‘OMEGA 3′ printed boldly on the outer packaging. It is true that eye health is promoted by sufficient supplies of omega fatty acids but to get enough, your diet today must be more than balanced, it must be power packed. You should include good quality fish oil in bottled or capsule form. Otherwise, you could settle permanently by a lake where you have abundant supplies of freshwater fish that you can catch and enjoy lightly cooked, every day.

Like the rest of the body, good eye health depends a lot on exercise. If we lead mainly indoor, sedentary lifestyles, our eyes do not get much exercise. Unlike, the past when people peered into the distance to check for enemies, today the furthest we look is at a book, computer or TV screen. Even with driving, everything is close at hand from license plates to direction signs to traffic signals. One exercise is to regularly look into the distance and see what you can see.

You should make regular visits to the optometrist to get a professional opinion on your eye health. The optometrist will also advise of impending problems and treat you accordingly. Good medical care of eyes goes a long way to ensuring that you have sight for life.

When it comes to eye disease, getting the right information can be a daunting task. That’s why we put together this confidential report for you at eye disease

Green Tea – Skin Tea That Will Improve Your Healthy Glow Skin

12 March, 2010 (07:03) | Nutrition | By: Aoife Joyce

Green Tea holds multiple properties that can improve the health of your skin. The main antioxidant found in this skin tea that can enhance your skins appearance and overall health is EGCG, Epigallocatechin Gallate in scientific terms. Keep reading to learn some extremely interesting facts about how Green Tea can prolong your skins life span….

A two year study that was done by Stanford University exposed recently showed the following – An assembly of volunteer Green Tea drinkers were observed and a number of exciting results were publicized. The antioxidants in the skin tea, mainly EGCG, showed enhanced health of the skin overall. The particulars being, smoother skin and reduced pore size. Skin damage (age spots) appearance was reduced considerably. Emergence of the ‘red vein’ look was reduced on the skins surface.

Your skins life cycle is that of just 28 days, when new cells are formed from stem cells, it takes them about 20 days to reach the very exterior of the epidermis (outer layer of skin). When they get to the surface they are then prepared to die off. However it emerged that EGCG reacted with these dying cells and they began separating and renewing themselves again. So if dying skin cells can be re-energised, then the skin in turn will recover in condition and will naturally look and feel transformed.

Another study carried out, this time by Harvard Medical School declared that “in test tubes, catechins (antioxidants) are more powerful than Vitamin C and E in delaying oxidative damage to cell”. In reality, EGCG catechins are 100 times more valuable than Vitamin C and 25 more efficient than Vitamin E.

UV radiation is a massive quandary for the skins ageing. When UV rays strike the skin, Free Radicals are then activated. These free radicals are electrons that are in an unpaired state. Because of this they then look for for electrons that they can pair up with.In doing this they are capable of attaching to healthy electrons, and because they are unhealthy themselves they injure the healthy electron they have become attached to.

With reference to the skins ageing, the skins healthy cells are damaged and extinguished by these Free Radicals. This causes the skins cells to either become so damaged that they cannot divide and deliver new cells, or they are destroyed completely before their life term should end. This is how sun damage has the effect it has and why your skin can look older and more ragged than it should. The good news is that EGCG can wipe out the Free Radical electrons, it does not allow them to attach to healthy cells. Thus, it can prevent sun damage.

In saying this, it does not mean it is safe for you to lay under the sun for as long as you please and think that a cup of Green Tea will save your skin, however it does mean that for those rays that get through your sun cream, most of them will be extinguished before they can do any damage. So you can see how Green Tea can coincide with your sun protective routine and assist your skin in looking as youthful and healthy as it should do. Considering that 90% of ALL skins anti ageing is due to UV radiation, I would be quite excited as regards introducing Green Tea into my diet, in favor of that and the many other reasons as above.

If you are as excited as I am about the marvel that this skin tea can do to both maintain and improve your skins youth and health, then do follow the link to find out so much more. This miracle natural plant can give new life and vivacity to you both physically and mentally, the more you learn about it, the more it can do for you… http://www.how-to-make-green-tea.com

Magnesium is Necessary for Optimum Health

3 March, 2010 (05:57) | Nutrition | By: Neil Butterfield

It is well known that minerals are vital to maintaining good health. Most people make sure to get enough calcium and iron. There are other less well-known minerals that have a tremendous impact on well-being. Magnesium is one such mineral. Sadly, 61% of adults do not meet the US RDA for magnesium. Receiving the health benefits of magnesium can be as simple as taking a magnesium supplement.

Magnesium is best known for its role in preventing and reversing osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a condition in which the bones become weak and brittle. Magnesium assists the body absorb and use calcium. It also affects the various hormones in the body that influence bone density and calcium absorption. Getting plenty of magnesium helps increase bone density but helping the body utilize calcium more efficiently. Excess calcium can migrate into the muscles, leading to cramps and pain. It can also move into the kidneys where it solidifies forming kidney stones. Getting adequate magnesium makes sure that more of this calcium is used and may help prevent kidney stones.

Magnesium also plays a role in the regulation of blood pressure and may help prevent hypertension. Doctors believe this is because magnesium relaxes the smooth muscle tissue responsible for dilating the arteries. By relaxing this muscle, magnesium may help prevent high blood pressure. It also seems to work alongside potassium in regulating the blood pressure.

Magnesium deficiency may also be a contributing factor in type 2 or adult-onset diabetes. Magnesium is an important element in the metabolism of carbohydrates. A deficiency of magnesium can lead to a condition called insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is when the enzyme responsible for regulating blood sugar no longer works as efficiently. It takes the much more insulin to lower the blood sugar in this case. Insulin resistance eventually can lead to type 2 diabetes. By getting plenty of magnesium, the body’s ability to break down and utilize carbohydrates will be improved and this may help prevent diabetes later on.

Blood pressure and blood sugar both affect cardiovascular health. It seems to reason then that magnesium would help ensure good cardiovascular health. Irregular heart rhythm can be caused by a lack of sufficient magnesium. Magnesium also stops abnormal blood clots from forming in the heart. Research has shown that patients recovering from strokes or heart attacks can be helped by using magnesium supplements. Magnesium may also prevent stroke and heart attacks in the first place.

Many of us do not get adequate amounts of magnesium in our diet. Magnesium is a crucial mineral that affects a number of important functions. A magnesium supplement is a great way to ensure that you get enough magnesium to maintain optimum health. It is generally recommended to take twice as much magnesium as calcium. A liquid supplement will also be beneficial because liquid minerals are more readily absorbed from the digestive tract. This makes more the magnesium available to the body. Don’t be part of the 61% who are deficient in magnesium. Use a magnesium supplement to protect your precious health.

Dr. Robert Young’s Professional Background

2 March, 2010 (07:59) | Nutrition | By: Seth Morris

Dr. Young is a nutritionist, microbiologist, and naturopath. He promotes a pro alkaline, low acid diet and believes that an overly acidic diet makes the body more prone to sickness and diseases. He has received a PhD as well as a ND (Doctor of Naturopathy) from Clayton College of Natural Health.

Together, Young and his wife, Shelley, run “The pH Miracle Center.” They also hold health seminars and farm alkaline fruits and vegetables. Dr. Young also does live blood analysis to determine how the condition of cells is related to that person’s diet and lifestyle. He also teaches courses on how to do this analysis with a microscope.

He has been influenced by the work of French biologist Antoine Bechamp as well as Gunther Enderlein, a German zoologist and entomologist. Both of these men advocated the theory of pleomorphism, which is basically the idea that cells in the body can change into unhealthy cells that can cause disease.

His research has led him to believe that the cells in our bodies are much more likely to change into unhealthy cells if the body contains too much acid. The average diet today is more acidic than alkaline so that is why eating foods that are alkaline is important in balancing out your pH levels and making your body less prone to disease.

Some of the prominent diseases that he associates with acidic pH levels in the body include cancer, obesity, osteoporosis, yeast overgrowth, and skin disorders. These are just a few of the diseases, but Dr. Young believes that all diseases are result of a body being too acidic. In other words, there is only one disease out there, and it is called acidosis. The other names we give diseases are merely a result of the body being too acidic.

Dr. Young’s solution for an overly acidic body is to eat more alkaline foods while reducing acidic foods. He also believes that an active lifestyle can make the body less acidic as well.

Thoughts On Sticking With A Real Food Diet

28 February, 2010 (09:07) | Nutrition | By: Maria Campbell

Starting a real food diet does not need to be that difficult. The secret to getting good results is to find an approach that works for you. It doesn’t have to be perfect, it just has to work.

See It As A Process

I’d advise you not to think about your diet as a temporary effort, or as something to adhere to strictly for a few weeks. Rather, view it as a progression through which you continually make an effort to improve your food choices.

If you slip up — inadvertently devour a whole package of Oreos in a single sitting (or whatever your own food demon is) — don’t beat yourself up over it. It isn’t a big deal. Just recognize it as a chance to identify a potential pitfall, and look for ways to avoid it in the future. With that in mind, here are some tips.

Healthy Fats and Protein Help

Keep in mind that we are hardwired to favor sugary, fatty foods — and also to avoid starvation! Those are two massive reasons that conventional dieting is so difficult. One good thing is that when you start eating a real food diet, you don’t have to deprive yourself – you just have to make healthier choices.

Swapping the standard low fat diet foods for more real foods that have healthy fats and protein can really help. Foods like grass-fed beef, raw dairy, and pastured eggs will help keep you satisfied and well-nourished.

For me, a painless change like swapping cereal for eggs for breakfast made a major difference. I stopped suffering the pre-lunch energy crashes, and my sugar cravings fell away. Even better, I lost some fat — and my cholesterol profile looks terrific!

Focus on Paying Attention

Another classic bit of diet wisdom is to always try to notice just how much food you need to feel satisfied. On a real food diet you will be eating fewer refined carbohydrates, which are all too easy to overstuff yourself with. As you switch to more whole foods with high-quality protein and fat, you’ll be satisfied with less – as long as you make an effort to notice. Just gradually work on making it a habit.

Although the usual diet advice is to not go back for seconds, I can’t recommend that. Personally, it just encourages loading up my plate with more than I really want or need, and feeling like I need to finish everything. I think it’s a better idea to begin with a tiny serving and go back as often as you need to. Just make a point of going slow, and notice how satisfied you feel between servings.

It Gets Easier

Don’t get too concerned about cravings when you are beginning a real food diet. Fighting against them will just make you miserable. Keep the vision of continuous improvement in mind, but give in here and there. As your diet gets better, cravings will ease up and will become less of a problem for you. Should you not find this happening within a few weeks, it’s time to revisit your diet and try some different things. Make sure that you’re eating enough good fats and protein, and keep working on cutting down on the amount of sugar you take in.

Also — and this is essential (at least for me) — be sure that you always have something that you can indulge in. Find one thing that you truly love (in moderation!), and invest in a good real food version of it. My indulgence is chocolate, and I can say that it works wonders in keeping me happy and satisfied while I continue my diet.

You Deserve A Healthy Diet!

Finally, keep your purpose in mind, and just remember that you are worth the effort! You deserve to eat well, and you are worth the additional effort that it takes to enjoy healthy real foods. Also realize that it will only get easier and quicker with practice — stick with it!

Never Ever Touch An Ab Workout Again!

27 February, 2010 (04:24) | Nutrition | By: Nick Harris

Don’t worry, you don’t need to slave away doing ab crunches and all those complicated ab workouts to get that beautiful, lean, toned stomach you’ve always wanted. Instead, you can just cheat your way to great abs with these can-not-fail tips!

#5 Lean, Toned Abs are So Last-Year.

Things have changed — now it’s all about beer bellies! No one really cares so much about great abs anymore. All the big trendsetters when it comes to what’s hot and what’s in are saying it loud and clear — flab is fab, lean is not.

#4 Your Body Will Conveniently Hide Fat For You.

Yeah, fine, we gain some fat — but who has ever heard of anyone’s body ‘placing’ that fat in an unfortunate place? I know we just chatted about those pot bellies above, but really, it’s not a big deal, because our bodies figure it all out and send the fat to places that never really see the light of day. So just eat away and don’t really worry, you’ll be fine!

#3 Beaches? What Beaches?

Aren’t beaches all polluted and stuff now? And global warming is making summers all crazy and unpredictable? If you combine that with a few other factors (I’ll get back to you on what those are once I think of them), you’ll see that a nicely toned body thanks to a few ab workouts isn’t really necessary at the beach, as most of the world’s beaches are empty year-round.

#2 Those ‘Pulsing’ Exercise Machines Do The Work For You.

Wondering why you see all those ads for those weird, pulsating ab workout machines that attach to your stomach? It’s easy! They just really, really work! Seriously, there’s no issue at all with them being inconvenient, fake, or prone to breaking down. Nope, you just attach a bunch of awkward electrodes to your flab and blast it away, we swear!

#1 Aren’t Diet Pills Just the Best?

Hey, diet pills have always worked, right? No one has ever gotten addicted to them, realized half of them are just sugar pills, or that the other half of them are wonderfully dangerous for your bodies and your health? Nah, no way! Pop those dangerous pills and bid “adieu” to those annoying crunches, right?

If you want to have a toned and lean body – get ready for a great body workout. You will find a fantastic workout routine and some nutrition info at Bodyrock.TV.

5 Tips For A Home Acne Cure Treatment That Really Work

24 February, 2010 (05:51) | Nutrition | By: Thomas Fisher

Acne is one of those conditions that is especially vexing to its victims because it can be triggered by many things and make an appearance at the most inopportune times. The solutions for acne are many and can range from drugstore creams to professional services administered at the dermatologist’s office. You might not be aware, though, that easy and effective solutions can be found in your own home and they barely cost anything. Try an acne cure treatment from the list below and you might be surprised at how simple it can be.

1. Cleanse your face at the end of the day.

This seems like it ought not to be even mentioned, but being neglectful about cleansing your face is quite common. After a long evening out you might just tell yourself that you don’t need to wash your face that particular night, but remember that make-up is a barrier placed on the skin. Even when you’re dead tired, make sure to wash your face and all the cosmetics and grime that can potentially trigger a breakout.

2. Pop the pimple when it’s asking for it.

This only applies to those pimples that have formed a visible white head on the surface and seem ready to be purged. By no means should you go digging, or attack any deep cystic acne. You can sanitize a needle with alcohol and gently puncture the head in order to squeeze out any pus. Dab on a bit of anti-bacterial ointment afterwards. Releasing the contents and pressure this way may actually better facilitate the healing process.

3. Salt water can be your friend.

Some people cite that a beach vacation has often helped clear up their skin. Where’s the connection? It’s in the sea water that you’ve been splashing around in. Salt is anti-bacterial and will help heal your skin. At home, you can make a salty solution yourself and apply it as a daily toner to keep your skin clean and clear.

4. Aspirin.

Taking aspirin can help in two ways. First, it works as an anti-inflammatory if taken orally. Second, if crushed and mixed with water into a paste, it can work as a mask. Gentle beta hydroxy acids will help clean up clogged pores, so try this a couple times a week and you will notice a clear glow to your complexion.

5. Ice cubes.

Nothing is cheaper than frozen water out of your refrigerator. This is particularly effective when you cool down a pimple as soon as you feel it emerging. It will bring down swelling, reduce any redness, and as long as you keep doing this on a regular basis, it ought to reduce the severity of the acne, or might keep it from blooming altogether.

How Juicing Can Boost Your Childrens Health

17 February, 2010 (05:58) | Nutrition | By: Paul Marks

Many people make New Year’s resolutions, and I was no different this year. I decided to focus on my family’s and especially children’s health. However, you do not need to wait until New Year to make changes, you can set a date any time of the year to make a fresh start.

This year, my main focus was to increase my kids’ consumption of fruit and vegetables. No easy task, but an important one, especially over winter. The nutritional boost can help protect against colds and other viruses. I wanted them to eat more fresh, preferably organic, produce from the grocery store. In their fresh form, fruit and vegetables contain a huge amount of vitamins and minerals.

If you you knew my kids, whom I am sure are like many, this was not going to be easy. I did however find a solution, in the form of juicing. Not only does freshly squeezed juice contain so many nutritious benefits, the different combinations you can make prevents them from getting bored and, in fact, wanting more.

The following is some of the main benefits for juicing for kids:

1. I have found that involving the kids in the making ot the juice is a fun event and a great way to bond. They can stand on a chair and help you push all the fruit and vegetables through the machine. Not only do they enjoy it but they appreciate the drink more and will drink it with no fuss. Clean up is simple as well. taking only about ten minutes.

2. A lot of children are not big veggie eaters, especially if they are anything like mine. Juicing provides the perfect solution for getting them to eat a wide range of different veggies in their raw fresh state. So they are getting more benefits than if the vegetables were cooked. This makes everyone in the home happier.

3. If your children start to eat more fresh fruit juice you will find they will quickly go off sweet sodas. So not only do they get the benefits from the juice they reduce their intake of sugar, chemicals and additives. These can all contribute to childhood obesity and many illnesses later in life. It will also save you money on buying these expensive drinks as well.

If you have made or set any goals for your family this year, then make their health a priority and in particular look at juicing. It is great fun, that your children can be involved in and will provide them with many health benefits for years to come.

Rob writes on the jack lalanne juicer appliances and about how to find the cheap fruit juicers on the internet.
