Swiss Cheese; Only The Fine Is Best

12 March, 2010 (05:26) | Recipes | By: Stefan George

Looking for the best cheese, then make sure you look for nothing but Swiss cheese. The quality should at least be “fine”. No doubt is would be expensive but good things come for a price and Swiss cheese is no just one of the best cheeses around.

Facts about the Swiss cheese

Here in the United States, we call any cheese with holes in it “swiss cheese”. In fact, the term “swiss cheese” has become a descriptive work of its own, meaning something where there are holes in it – like a “memory like swiss cheese.” Actually, swiss cheese is just a generic name for any type of holed cheese, It can be made in Canada, New Zealand, Australia, or the United States…in fact, at this time, the largest swiss cheese factory in the world is in Ohio. All cheeses with holes are trying to simulate the cheese made in Switzerland, known as Emmetal.

There are other types of holed cheese in Switzerland, such as Gruyre, but Emmetal is the most fine type of swiss cheese there is. Guyre is imitated a lot. The holes are much smaller, and much more evenly spaced in the cheese. It is also aged longer, often 10-12 months. It is made from a cow’s milk with a greater amount of fat, so it is a sweeter cheese. As a swiss cheese, it melts easily and can be used with almost any part of the menu – appetizer, entree, or dessert.

Baby swiss cheese can be fine, but as it is made in ways to comply with government regulations (regarding aging time and whether milk is pasteurized prior to making into cheese) this is difficult to assertain. The holes are much smaller due to the shorter aging time. Also, the flavor is sweeter and milder.

In the process of making this cheese, the bacteria involved make the holes. Bacteria consume byproducts of other bacteria and lactic acid and then also excrete some amount of carbon dioxide gas. Bubbles are developed through this carbon dioxide gas and holes are formed as this cheese gets solidified.

How can this process contribute in picking the best Swiss cheese?

A fine swiss cheese will have larger “eyes,” and a greater flavor. The stronger flavor is caused by the longer aging time and the higher temperature, and these also lead to larger holes in the swiss cheese.

It is extremely hard to come across the best Swiss cheese that isn’t sliced in the US. As cheese having holes often gets caught in the machinery used for slicing that can cost the company both money and time. Hence manufacturers of Swiss cheese in the US make Swiss cheese that is best on its package but lesser aged and flavor as compared to the imported Swiss cheese.

Making Your Very Own Barbeque Sauce Recipe

18 February, 2010 (07:18) | Recipes | By: Michael Callahan

Most people won’t give a second thought to the type of barbeque sauce they use. Head down to the local supermarket, pick one off the shelf that looks pretty, and you’re done. Well, for some folks these days, that just won’t cut it. They’ll happily create their own barbeque sauce recipe from scratch. And you know what? Turns out you can create your own great BBQ sauce without too much hassle.

You can easily buy readily available BBQ sauce, of course, but I’ll let you in on a little secret: nothing can beat the sauce that is homemade. You may argue that you don’t know how to make one but making your own BBQ sauce can be very easy. There are in fact many barbeque sauce recipes available, so getting one, then mixing and matching, should never be a problem. You can source for them in bookstores, the internet, or even from friends. Creating your own homemade recipe not only give you a sense of satisfaction when you know your family will enjoy it, but you can also avoid all the preservatives and other chemical additives that may come along with the commercially available sauces.

There are many many barbeque sauce recipes around, so snagging one, then mixing and matching, tasting and testing, to create your own version isn’t that big a deal — trust me. You can get them from the internet, of course, bookstores, or ask friends and relatives. Concocting your own homemade barbeque sauce gives you a real sense of satisfaction, plus if it’s real good you may be able to take it on the road and market it. Plus, by making your own, you can avoid most of the preservatives and other chemicals that may come in the bottled versions.

It’s true that crafting your own barbeque sauce can be simple, but it’s also true that you probably won’t nail it right away. Just like with anything, it can take time to master, and in this case, some trial and error. Having said that, you’ll be surprised to know that the ingredients list for most homemade barbeque sauces are simple. Most sauces start with a base like vinegar or tomato sauce. From there you can add ingredients as you see fit. In little time you’ll have a hit sauce on your hands.

In my book, nothing is better at a barbeque than a great homemade barbeque sauce. A stellar barbeque sauce recipe does take some trial and error, however. Use an open mind when testing ingredients. Before long you’ll have a sauce that friends and family will be raving about.

Understanding Grills

18 February, 2010 (06:54) | Recipes | By: Angela Johnson

Outdoor grills are available in such a huge variety of styles, extras, power sources, as well as level of quality it is sometimes tough to decide what design would be the very best. A simple truth is that there are actually very good grills in nearly each and every group as well as in nearly all prices.

What you want to use it for, and how many people you want to use it for is going to influence your choice. The best grill for you personally will be the one within your budget, and also suits your requirements.

A large heavy piped in gas grill could be fantastic for your backyard but a colossal fail for the purpose of camping or having around for a picnic. So sort out whether or not it is a transportable grill to carry to the picnic area or if it’s to stay in position and cook for twenty people.

You probably know how much you intend to spend and now it is time to settle on whether you would like a electric or gas grill. Gas is clean, it’s easily obtainable and works on a small tank and has clean consistent heat source however does not have that distinctive grilled taste which grilling with charcoal may give. It lacks the taste associated with charcoal.

Charcoal grills are generally transportable and provide a distinct grilled essence to food. They are pretty cheap to own. However it uses an open flame, is more challenging to manage the temperature and ashes are left therefore it is harder to wash up.

Electric Grills possess a clean temperature source tend to be much less transportable and lack the unique grilled flavoring connected with charcoal.

As soon as that determination is done you’ll proceed to what size you require as well as just what frills you prefer and start shopping for that new grill.

While searching for a grill the price tag of course is a consideration because you could spend relatively little on a brand new grill or invest as much as you do for a major kitchen appliance. Cost doesn’t always equal high quality. Here are a few matters you should look at when shopping for a grill.

An outdoor grill which collapses whenever the breeze blows may not be for you. You need a long lasting well-made grill. Steel will probably be the material of choice, but ensure, if you are spending money on a steel grill it is steel all over rather than some inferior metal on the legs. Aluminum though lightweight is indeed durable for outdoor use.

The best grill lasts for countless years so take a look at the manufacturer’s warranty too. Name brands opposed to off-brands may show a number of important variations in prices with off brands generally having a cheaper price . tag.

The guarantees might not be as well supported as brand name guarantees because the manufacturers of name brand grills may have a reputation to maintain. Make sure you look at feedback, consumer accounts or even your next-door neighbor when considering a purchase you want to last longer than a year.

A good grill can add more dimensions to your outdoor cooking as well as last for many years into the future and be well really worth the price.

Wine Reviews & Guide

17 February, 2010 (10:02) | Recipes | By: Anne Durrell

Does ordering wine intimidate or perhaps confuse you? It may when you do not really buy or consume wine beverages frequently and that’s okay, there’s a lot of mystery and occasionally snobbery connected with wine.

However, wine is the perfect accompaniment for some meals and there are times when you might want to choose a wine to serve in the home or order in a restaurant. If you want to know about wines, try them to find out what you like and what you don’t prefer in wines.

So why White Or Red?

Wine beverages differ in flavor and tannin content (pucker) as well as how the wines strike the taste buds. The white with pike or perhaps red with meats is often a rule about pairing wines with meals that you might often hear.

It is a general principle influenced by the idea that red wines tend to have more flavor and white wines are typically lighter in taste and the theory is that red wine beverages will not be overwhelmed by the steak and white wine beverages tend to be delicate thus suit the subtly flavored dishes such as perch. Even so, guidelines are created to be broken. Pair meals and wines in accordance with your tastes instead.

A delicate red wine beverage can be overwhelmed by a spicy dish no matter the type of the meat. In cases where it does not taste good to you personally, then don’t pair it regardless how many times you have heard the rule. Try out various kinds of wine together with your food.

You shouldn’t be afraid to try a mild white wine along with your steak: did it hold up or does the flavor get over powered? Experiment with a light red with seafood and you will know from your taste buds if the guideline for that wine beverage needs to be broken.

Determine if you enjoy a fairly sweet taste in your wine or a dry wine beverage (less sweet). Take note of how they react with what you eat. If you do not like the combination or the taste of the wine beverage it won’t make any difference what the year was or even how pricey the bottle of wine it is not your best option or a perfect match.

It Was a Good Year for Wines

What impact does a year make? Wines created in a single region can be exceptional one year and yet another year they are just lackluster caused by lack of rainfall, or excess rainfall and several other factors that have an effect on the grapes.

If you’re still learning about wines, you might not know which years are good and what wines are less appealing. This requires practice. One of many ways could be to find out from your wine retailer what they recommend. A single bottle of Cabernet wine made by a vineyard in one season may perhaps be magnificent in your estimation but of poor quality in the judgment of some others.

Asking questions is nice however depending on the feedback of many people completely is not good. Whenever you do not like it, do not pick it no matter how costly it is or how much the wine vendor brags over it.

To start with, you might rely purely upon suggestions from other people to assist you choose. Even so, in time you’ll find wine beverages that you like and other wines that do not. Never slavishly obey guidelines or drink wines you don’t like based on the price. Enjoy wine and soon you’ll be buying with confidence.

The Tasty Treat Of Delicious Waffles

12 February, 2010 (08:37) | Recipes | By: Clement Rock

Any mother knows that on weekends their kids are going to want waffles or pancakes for breakfast. After the hustle and bustle of the week is over, it is nice to sit down with the family and have a good old breakfast. One can find many different variations of waffles that can be made. All will be gobbled up by your willing taste testers.

Waffles are made on waffle irons. The batter consists of eggs, flour, oil, milk, sugar and baking powder. A person can always add to this base mix. Some additions that could make them special are chocolate chips, coconut, chopped nuts, applesauce, pumpkin, blueberries, strawberries or even banana slices. Just add this right into the batter.

Once the batter is made, about a cup is poured onto the hot waffle iron. It is easy to find many different types of irons in the stores today. A regular iron will create a waffle about one inch thick and round. It will give the diner about four pieces of waffle.

The Belgium waffle iron is a favorite of many. It is thicker. The waffle will be approximately two inches thick. There is also a bigger waffle iron. This makes waffle squares that are about twelve inches by twelve inches. These waffles are a big square that can be pulled apart into four smaller squares. Most irons take almost five minutes to cook each one.

Traditionally waffles stuck to the irons. People would put butter on them to try to stop the sticking. The invention of Teflon was great as it created an iron in which the batter did not stick. The waffle easily pops out. There is no need to get frustrated with a messy waffle iron. Typically there is very little mess. The trick is to pour a little bit of batter on the hot iron and spread it over the iron with a spatula a little at a time.

Topping a waffle is always fun. Put on your thinking cap and get together some delicious toppings. Of course you may always put the maple syrup and butter on them. It is very good. However, for the thrill seekers, try topping the waffle with whipped topping and sprinkles, sliced fruit or even chocolate pieces. As for syrups, there are many in the stores to choose from. There are maple, sugar free, strawberry or blueberry syrups to try.

If you want to please and surprise your family with a weekend treat, try waffles. They could be made traditionally or very fancy. They are cheap to make and chances are all the supplies are in your pantry. Add some toppings and voila, a delicious breakfast.

An individual can find many different variations of waffles that can be made. All will be gobbled-up by your willing taste testers. Easy easy waffle recipes for waffle makers a single click away.

Serve Corn Fritters To Win Over Your Finicky Eaters

7 February, 2010 (05:08) | Recipes | By: Nicole Dean

Getting kids to eat their vegetables is a struggle in many homes. Disguising vegetables is one way to get kids interested enough to at least try something new. Corn Fritters are a great example of turning an ordinary vegetable into something extraordinary.

If you can turn some ordinary corn into Corn Fritters quickly and easily, you’ve got a solution to the problem. Just one easy Corn Fritters recipe that you can turn to when you need a vegetable that your kids will eat, is all you need to provide your kids with a balanced diet.

Once you learn the basics of how to make Corn Fritters, the rest is easy. You’ll want either a good heavy skillet or a deep fryer. A thermometer may come in handy, but you can also test the oil by dropping a little bit of batter in to make sure it sizzles before you begin frying an entire batch. Don’t crowd the pan with too many fritters or the temperature will drop and the fritters will get soggy and greasy. Use a good “high heat” frying oil like peanut oil, sunflower oil, or safflower oil. Be sure the oil comes up about half way on the fritters in the skillet. Follow the manufacturers guide if you’re using a deep fryer.

Making Corn Fritters requires one ingredient for sure – corn. You can use fresh corn on the cob if it’s available, or you can use frozen corn or canned corn. Some people like the flavor of creamed corn and some people prefer whole kernel corn. You’ll just need to change the amount of liquid added to the recipe to form the batter depending on which style of corn you use.

The ingredient most likely used in a Corn Fritters recipe to bind the corn together will be flour. You may also like to use a pancake mix, muffin mix, or cornmeal. Or, you may want to combine these ingredients together and come up with your own unique blend.

A Corn Fritters recipe may or may not call for adding an egg. Even if the recipe doesn’t call for an egg, you may want to add one simply for the nutritional value. However, it’s up to you. See how your batter is holding together and then decide.

Now comes the flavor of your Corn Fritters. Add in seasonings that you like. Try some garlic and onion if your kids like that. If not, how about some Parmesan cheese? You can even put in a touch of sugar if you want to really sneak that corn past your kids. Drizzle a little honey on top and they’ll think they’ve just been served dessert.

Making Corn Fritters to disguise corn is only one way to get vegetables onto your child’s plate. Try mixing a variety of vegetables together for an entirely different fritter treat. A “Veggie Combo Fritter” might be fun, especially if you find one vegetable your child likes and mix it in with other veggies to disguise them. Do a little experimenting with the ingredients to see how many different fritters your child will eat.

Anything goes when it comes to getting veggies onto my family’s dinner table. When my kids won’t eat a plain old dish of corn, then I’m up to the challenge. Being creative and being sneaky may just go hand-in-hand when it comes to nutrition. Years from now when my kids ask why I was always making Corn Fritters, I’ll confess my deception. Until then, I’ll continue my secret vegetable disguises wherever necessary!

Grab your mixing bowl and skillet and whip up a batch of tasty Corn Fritters for your family today. You’ll be glad you did… and so will your family!

Learning how to make corn fritters is easy when you have great recipes from which to choose. Be sure to check out our easy vegetable recipes to get your kids eating right!

When making them at home from scratch you will have a bit more flexibility and can change the waffle recipe a bit to meet your needs. With a common recipe, it is easy to make how the recipe says as well as try out a few things and see how they taste.

To start, you need some basic ingredients, most of which can be found in your pantry. You will need four ounces of all purpose flour and 4 ounces of whole wheat flour. You will need one tablespoon of sugar and two tablespoons of baking powder. You will need a pinch of salt, three eggs and one and a half cups of milk. To make a waffle, there are only a few simple steps. This can be done by anyone, even children can help. Before you mix any ingredients, be sure to turn on the waffle iron. In a different bowl, mix all of the wet ingredients together. The wet ingredients would be the eggs, the milk and the oil. Mix and stir all of these together until the milk and eggs are blended together well. This may take a few minutes to get the right consistency.

If you want to add any additional ingredients such as fruit, cinnamon or chocolate chips, now would be the time to do so. Mix again and then cook.

With the batter ready, pour a half cup of waffle batter into the waffle iron. Close the lid and let it sit for about a minute. Check on the iron every so often until the waffle is a golden brown. This is when the waffle is done and is ready to be eaten.
