10 Steps For Cooking-Up Family Memories

31 August, 2010 (05:58) | Recipes | By: Alfred Lancer

The kitchen is the perfect place for making memories. When you spend time baking, cooking and enjoying meals with your family, you create happy memories you and your children will cherish forever.

The benefits of preparing and enjoying food as a family are clear. You save money and eat healthier meals. You create opportunities to connect and communicate with your children and spouse. And most importantly, you show love for your family when you spend time cooking and eating with them. Children of all ages need your attention and your time. By working together to create a meal or bake a batch of cookies, you spend valuable time together.

So, here are 10 steps to get your family cooking up memories.

Step 1: Teach small children the fun of cooking by helping them bake cookies and cakes. If you are short on time, you can use a boxed cookie mix and spend more time decorating.

Step 2: Encourage the littlest ones to play pretend cooking. Kids love to play with real mixing bowls, strainers and wooden spoons. These make harmless toys and can be easily thrown in the dishwasher for quick cleanup.

Step 3: If you live by your day-timer, schedule in baking cookies with your kids. Our schedules can be so hectic that something as simple as baking a batch of chocolate chip cookies can get skipped over. Write it down and do it.

Step 4: If you have teenagers, let them play their favorite music while they wash the lettuce and set the table.

Step 5: Work together with your spouse to prepare the dinner and use the time to catch up on each other’s day.

Step 6: Even if you are in a rush preparing dinner, remember to reduce your stress and focus on creating a fun atmosphere that naturally encourages the whole family to participate.

Step 7: When spending time preparing food with your children, include lessons about healthy eating choices. Keep the conversation positive and avoid listing foods they can’t have.

Step 8: On days where you anticipate time will be tight, consider taking a short cut by using a frozen stir-fry mix or pasta with a jar of pre-made sauce. Your family will appreciate your relaxed mood much more than a made-from-scratch dinner.

Step 9: Share the job of grocery shopping. One week have mom take one of the children as a helper, the next week dad can go with another child. Always work from a grocery list and let your children help you retrieve items and cross them off the list.

Step 10: Have big family meals where you share about your day. Keep the conversation fun and avoid negative lectures over dinner. Remember to laugh.

Take these steps today and make your kitchen a fun and memorable place for your whole family.

Italian Recipes Feature A Diversity Of Pasta Ingredients

31 August, 2010 (05:43) | Food | By: Ashley King

Did you know that some people believe pasta was first invented in China? Whether it was or not, Italian recipes for pasta go back a long, long time, so obviously if they didn’t invent this food, they adopted it as soon as traders introduced it to them. And they really ran with the concept too, which is why we associate so many pasta recipes with Italy. Countless fish and meat recipes for pasta, as well as their sauces, will forever be associated with Italy in most people’s minds.

Different regions of Italy have always produced different types of food, and this is partly why an Italian recipe can vary so much when it comes to pasta. Recipes that originate in the northern regions will reflect early German and Roman cultures, while the south was more influenced by Arab trade, which carried Mediterranean influences quite widely.

The northern dishes will consist of more pork recipes, fish, sausages and cheeses. Foods of central Italy tend more toward ham, sausage, tomatoes and tortellini. To the south, you’ll also find tomatoes, with olives, peppers, garlic, artichokes, zucchini and capers.

The e-rcps.com website, which features Italian recipes with some Middle Eastern recipes as well, has an entire Italy-related section called “Pasta Recipes Listed by Region.” Here you can see all these differences illustrated in the recipes you choose for the different areas. For example, a recipe from Lombardy, a northern area, is “Pasta with Cheese and Green Cabbage,” the cabbage showing early Roman influences, whereas a typical recipe from Campania to the south would be “Vermicelli with Hot Pepper and Anchovy.” Italian food isn’t nearly as uniform as North Americans tend to portray it, and tomatoes are not always the primary ingredient.

The first thing most people think of when contemplating Italian recipes is tomatoes. Yet that’s not entirely fair to the distinctive cuisine of this country. Italian food was rich in variety and regional tradition long before the tomato entered the picture in the early 1800s. People interested in Italian pasta might find it interesting to explore beyond the tomato-laden dishes, and learn some of the other food traditions that have existed throughout Italy’s history.

Microwave Tips And Information

30 August, 2010 (06:03) | Food | By: Andrew Tucker

The microwave oven is one of the most convenient inventions in modern times designed for cooking.

The microwave oven has to be the most innovative way to cook food that has been developed in the last century. It has revolutionized how quickly it takes to prepare a healthy, delicious meal, and helps accommodate our increasingly hectic and fast-paced lives. With the help of the microwave oven, you can prepare a meal that would normally take hours in a matter of minutes!

A meal that would have taken you an hour to cook before can be cooked in mere minutes and all the nutritional qualities will be kept within the food instead of evaporating as happens with most foods while being cooked over the hob or in an oven.

There were quite a few people who could not afford to purchase a microwave oven when they first came out, as they were quite expensive. However, as time went on and less expensive manufacturing methods were found, prices dropped to the point where it is possible for just about anyone to get a microwave oven if they want to. This is helped by all of the brand competition that companies go through, which leads to lowering the prices of their ovens in order to sell more. Granted, while most microwaves are affordable, you can get more advanced microwaves if you shell out more money.

You can find quite a few microwave ovens on the market, all of which will cook a wide variety of foods at different settings, some of which can be automatic. Microwave ovens will prepare just about any sort of food you like, from pizzas to even rice. You can find these devices at just about any retail store you could imagine, but you can find far better prices when you shop online for them.

If you want to purchase a microwave oven online, all you have to do is visit the varying online stores that carry them, peruse the selection you have available, and pick the ones that you like, going from store to store to compare the prices. Once you find the best microwave for the lowest price, purchase it, and it will be shipped very quickly to your home. You can pay for it safely with your credit card.

Within a microwave the food is not cooked by conventional heat sources but by the use of microwaves, these microwaves target water molecules in the food and heats them up, essentially cooking the food from the inside out. To heat dry foods in a microwave they need to be specially made so they have these water molecules or are placed in water, otherwise they will not be cooked by the microwaves.

Some Cola Myths Are Cleared Here

24 August, 2010 (05:06) | Food | By: Henrique Hammer

As many of us know, Coca-Cola is one of the most popular drinks in the world.

It tastes fantastic, and it’s wonderful for when you really need something refreshing to drink, indeed loved by many.

Thats why there are many of us worldwide who love it.

Cola was invented by a pharmacist called Angelo Mariani in 1863. Since it has been around for this long, it became subject of some urban legends and myths.

Although some of this myths are believable, others are completely jokes.

Since i am one of those millions of people that love cola, in the following paragraphs i’ll attempt to clear a few of this myths.

Myth 1 – “Cola contains Cochineal, a bug dye” – This can be a weird one.

You should have guessed yourself.

If you do not know what Cochineal is, let me explain you: it is an organic food dye made from a very small bug. Argh, my dear god.. but know what, that’s not in the cola.

Myth 2 – “Cola is very acidic, so if you left a penny or a piece of meat in it, it will dissolve overnight” – Lots of people believe that this myth is true, probably because it sounds real.

You may have heard the story about the fly that wonders into the cup of cola and the next day it has been eaten away by the acidity of the drink.

It is true that cola can dissolve some materials, but that takes a lot more than one night.

For example take orange juice, it’s also very acidic and it’ll dissolve a material in about the same time as cola would.

Myth 3 – “The Aluminum from Cola cans can lead to Alzheimer’s disease” – I can understand that some people might believe in this one, but that is not true.

First of all there is no there was never confirmed that aluminum could cause Alzheimer disease.

Even if there was a link between your aluminum and Alzheimer disease, all cola cans are lacquered on the inside to prevent any contact between the aluminum and the drink.

There are many more obviously, but these are the ones that bothered me the most, knowing these I can now drink my cola without worry!

Appliances Provide A Rejuvenated Atmosphere And Save You Money

19 August, 2010 (05:30) | Food | By: Vivian Summers

Want to give your kitchen a new look? No easier and lower-cost way to do it than with some new appliances.

In a short space of time you can revamp it just by changing your old insipid and dull-looking appliances with some brand new colorful ones.

Also, you should know that whichever appliance you decide to buy to replace your old one, it is not just your kitchen appearance that will benefit from this. Depending on how much energy they consume, you are most likely to get a rebate if you choose appliances that are Energy Star rated, and all as a result of the ‘cash for appliances’ program. The rebate program is federally funded with $300 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, but the rules vary by state.

Before shopping for new appliances, check information from your state, easily done with an internet search engine, and see which appliances qualify and how much the rebates will be. The size of the rebate may be a fixed amount of approximately $50 to $200 per appliance as projected by the Department of Energy or a percentage of the cost.

In some states the launching of this program will suffer some months of delay. In the state of Oklahoma, for instance, the launching is scheduled for April 22 and rebates will be limited to one per appliance and two per household. Also, the removal and disposal of old appliances once they have been replaced with the new energy efficient ones is a requirement in Oklahoma. The program in other states has had an early launch and the funds were quickly exhausted – Minnesota is one such state.

Although a great opportunity, you should not let the rebate funding influence your plans for your kitchen renovation. Rebate or no rebate, new appliances can be rewarding all by themselves.

If you replace older appliances with Energy Star qualified models, you can not only give your kitchen a new look, you can save every month on your electricity bill. After heating and air-conditioning, refrigerators are the most energy-consuming appliances in anyone’s household, so a new model will be an investment that will pay off every month.

In some states the rebate program may be restricted to certain items, like refrigerators or washers, but even if that is also the case with your state, you shouldn’t refrain from paying the extra $600 for a new stove that will definitely improve the look of your kitchen. The change cannot only be cheaper than new cabinets, walls or floors, but is also one that is quick and painless. Another advantage to replacing the appliances in your kitchen is that all you need to do is go to the store, buy them and arrange for their delivery, as opposed to an overall remodeling that implies days or even weeks of having a construction site in your home, not to mention the search for a competent contractor. In less than a day’s time and with no trouble at all you can have an entirely different kitchen, more modern, more elegant and better-performing.

Choosing Between Gas And Charcoal Grills

18 August, 2010 (05:38) | Food | By: Darren T. Wilson

The discussion continues when it comes to the relative advantages of gas and charcoal grills. While each grill has its good and bad points, people’s sense of loyalty seems strong when it comes to the grill they like best. If you’re on the hunt for a new grill and are trying to figure out which one to get, here’s some useful information that can help you make the right decision.

If you’re looking for speed and convenience, then you definitely want to go with a gas grill – just light ‘er up and she’ll be hot and ready in a few moments. You can also more easily regulate the heat, which allows you to pace the cooking if required. Aside from these important components, gas grills seem to attract buyers because of the versatility in models which come with various features such as side burners for cooking veggies or heating up side dishes.

It’s also simpler to clean a gas grill than a charcoal model because there are no ashes and embers to deal with. Even if there is leftover residue on your grill, simply turn the heat up for a bit, and wipe.

When you’re talking about a charcoal grill, there’s no doubt that the taste and aroma of food cooked over wood smoke is matchless. It does requires more patience since charcoal grills take a bit longer to heat up than do gas grills. Furthermore, lighting the grill and letting the charcoal burn down can take up to 40 minutes. This won’t be convenient for those times when you have a sudden urge for barbecue.

Because you can’t control the level of heat, it’s important to pay attention to the food as it is cooking. Clean-up will also be more work, because you need to safely dispose of hot ashes and embers.

You also want to do some comparison of initial costs along with continuous expenses for each model of grill. Although gas grills cost more than charcoal grills up front, buying the propane needed for gas grills is generally less expensive than the charcoal briquettes required for charcoal grills. Also, a gas grill has a lot parts that can break or wear out, so you may find a charcoal grill will hold up longer for you. Ultimately, you will want to choose the one that suits both your lifestyle and your budget. Most of the time it’s busy people who tend to choose gas grills as their meals will be cooked faster. If your lifestyle is more laid back, you’ll love the extraordinary flavor of whatever you choose to grill over those hot coals.

Italian Pasta Recipes Offer Many Choices

17 August, 2010 (04:56) | Recipes | By: Shelley Lindt

Even if pasta itself wasn’t actually invented in Italy, Italian pasta recipes are usually displayed as the standard for everyone else to live up to. One of the reasons, apart from the delicious taste of these dishes, is their versatility. They can move from winter to summer with ease, from dark and heavy to light and herbal. On a cold, snowy evening you may want nothing more than a hearty macaroni and cheese dish, but as spring arrives, bring out the tomatoes and the light herbs.

Even the name of pasta primavera loosely refers to spring. But some claim it isn’t really Italian, since it was introduced to American society by Le Cirque restaurant in New York. Yet according to Foodreference.com, the chef there received it from the painter and writer of Italian cookbooks, Edward Giobbi. So it may be one of the genuine Italian pasta recipes after all. This spaghetti dish uses the first tomatoes of spring, with fresh basil, parsley and garlic, and extra virgin olive oil, making it a lovely lighter dish for the emerging springtime.

Another of the Italian pasta recipes that will work well in spring is pasta pomodoro. The flavor of this dish resides primarily in the pomodoro sauce itself, which begins with the typically Italian combination of tomatoes, garlic and olive oil. You can use some creativity to personalize the dish, adding ingredients such as mushrooms, peppers or sauteed onions. This dish is said to go especially well with poultry, so you might want to add chunks of cooked chicken to the sauce.

Italian pasta salads also become prominent as spring progresses, and they too can be light or a little heavier. Some recipes are as simple as tossing some pasta with fresh tomatoes, feta cheese, olives and basil. There are more complicated versions as well. Epicurious.com has a wonderful recipe for Italian sausage pasta salad which includes a sautee of sausage, broccoli, and zucchini tossed with fresh tomatoes, parmesan cheese, olives and wine. Or you could make a vegetarian version of this dish by eliminating the sausage or substituting tofu.

You can use all sorts of different pastas, and will discover that there’s a method to their amazing variety of shapes and sizes. The different shapes will actually affect how sauces are retained or even how other ingredients are held together. Between the different types of pasta and the Italian pasta recipes themselves with their variety of creamy, tomato-rich, vegetable or meat-filled sauces, you can create full meals, side dishes or light salads, covering almost any mood, weather condition or time of year.

Making your own pasta noodles from fresh ingredients might sound difficult, but it’s not. And the superior flavor and texture are well worth the effort. Click here to learn how a pasta rolling machine such as the Atlas pasta maker can help you make delicious pasta with minimal fuss.

Explaining What Are Organic Items

17 August, 2010 (04:22) | Nutrition | By: Cheska Hughes

The word “Organic” is now the commonly repeated word that is used by the health conscious consumer. It seems like everyone is looking for naturally produced food, and entire industries have emerged and thrived solely based around the existence of this practice. It’s all the rage these days, and the trend doesn’t seem as if it will ever slow down, since we’ve all learned about the dangers of chemicals inside food. What is the real meaning of the word organic though? It has been seen that many items use the word organic and for this reason, the US government has taken steps to regulate its application to food products.

The term organic basically means the kind of food that has been produced by not using any pesticides, synthetic hormones of genetically modified organisms. It must be planted using natural fertilizers and natural insect controlled ways. It is therefore not produced using the conventional method of agriculture.

Meats, milk and such like should only be obtained from organic livestock that have been bred in the natural way by eating natural grain and be grazed outdoors.

The organic items are classified as 100% which is labeled with USDA Organic seal for pure organic content.

On the other hand, if the label shows only one word, “Organic,” then it means it is not really up to 100% even though it may still get the seal.

Labels should be checked very carefully, because if it reads something like, “made with organic ingredients,” it means that it has a minimum of 75% organic ingredients and therefore cannot qualify for the USDA seal. The label may also state “contains organic ingredients,” and that automatically means the item has lower than 70% organic ingredients and as such cannot be sealed with the USDA seal.

In the beginning the labels may actually look confusing but it is imperative that one realizes that substituting the conventional items with a more natural one is a first step towards good health habit. Organic foods will mean you are not exposed to more of pesticides and this will improve your general good health.

More and more grocery stores now stock a special counter for shoppers who want to buy organic items. If you have not noticed this in your local store, the best thing is to ask the manager to try and start it.
