Make Tastier Food by Enhancing Your Cooking Skills

10 March, 2010 (08:14) | Cooking-Tips | By: Fara Thompson

If you are a relatively new cook, you can use this article to increase not only the quality but also the taste of the dishes that you make. There are quite a few tips that would help you in enhancing the quality of your cooking. It may seem impossible, but there could be some simple tips that would go a long way in helping your dishes taste much better. It is not always necessary to joining a cookery school to become a better cook. If you just learn to add to your style, it could help you get amazing results.

The first tip to start from is to make sure that you have a good knife in your kitchen. The better the knife, the easier and convenient it would be for you to cut the meat and vegetables. You should buy a reasonable knife and then maintain the sharpness for controlling your speed and quality of cutting in the kitchen.

Knowing what the best ingredients are important to have a good meal ready. You can use many kinds of imported as well as local spices to spruce up your dishes. You have to know how to differentiate between these to produce better dishes. It is better to go in for those which make your dishes the best. Things like crumbs which are homemade are also ideal for this purpose. The reason is that these provide a better result than stuff which is packaged.

Always go for the one which gives the best taste. You should also go for fresh homemade things like crumbs if possible. They would give you better results than the packaged ones.

Using toothpicks, knives and forks is also highly recommended. If you want to get the best flavor and the aroma and taste in your food, learn to mix it with your own hands.

Usage of sea or table salt is also materially important here. Using salt always gives the best results as it increases the taste of food much better than table salt. You should be careful to use the right amount of salt in food, and not be guided only by what the recipes states.

When you are sauteing the vegetables make sure that you do not put too many all at once. To get the best flavor you must be able to see the pan bottom. If you put too many vegetables together than the temperature would go down and your vegetables would not get the perfect brown. Always make your pan hot before putting the vegetables for cooking.

If you follow these steps, you are likely to get good results in terms of the kind of cooking that you do.

A Tasty Barbecue Marinade for a Perfect Dinner

7 January, 2010 (09:32) | Recipes | By: Sam Linton

The summer season is unique in that it has a special quality that translates into the ideal time for barbecuing. It could be the warmth of the season that stirs people to enjoy the outdoors by dining on barbecue specialties which cannot be found during the winter. Maybe it is as simple as the fact that the summer is just the best opportunity to enjoy life with family and friends.

Whatever the reasons may be for enjoying barbecued meals during the summertime, it’s hard to argue with the fact that some are good at grilling while other are dreadful at it. Even a person who is absolutely horrible at it can occasionally produce a nicely grilled chunk of meat. There must be another essential component for grilling great meat that is missing, regardless of the type or cut of meat being barbecued…chicken, ribs, or steak.

The essential element that will guarantee a wonderful grilled meal is a marinade, a special sauce, or a rub. There are a variety of rubs that can be prepared to enhance the flavor of any meat that you want to barbecue. Rubs can be herbal, sweet, or spicy, mild or fiery; you can impart the flavors you like to your barbecued foods and create a meal that is all your own.

While there is certainly, a lot to be said about the person in charge of the barbecue when it comes to how tasty a meal is, the barbecue marinade actually has a lot to do with how the meat turns out. People who grill across the country in competitions all use their own unique blend of herbs, spices and other ingredients in the formation of their barbecue sauce, and if they can do it – so can you.

There are certain ingredients which you should always add (if you are over twenty five, chances are that you know which spices you prefer over others) to a BBQ marinade and simply mix your favorite flavors together until you come up with something suitable.

The traditional barbecue sauce, rub or marinade in reality will result in ninety percent of the flavor of the beef or chicken. Barbecue sauce is that addition to the meat that gives it that special flavor, the missing ingredient which takes a good food and makes it soar into an awesome culinary experience.

Kyocera Ceramic Knife – 5 Reasons Why To Buy The Best Ceramic Chef’s Knives

15 November, 2009 (09:54) | Food | By: jon kelly

Ceramic blade knives appear unusual, this maybe because we associate the ceramic material with delicate cups and saucers, Ceramic knives are different and are made from zirconium oxide which is one of the hardest substances on the planet, this helps give them properties which are seen by many as making them into some of the best chef’s knives.

1 Sharpness Of The Ceramic Knife Blade

They are very sharp which will enable you to cut your food millimetres thick. The great advantage to a knife this sharp is that it cuts straight through any meat or vegetables and means that you will get less slippage making it a lot safer than a comparable blunter steel knife.

2 Almost Never Get Blunt

Because the Kyocera ceramic knife is a much denser material than steel the blade will last months or years before you have to consider sharpening it.

3 The Strength And Lightness Of The Kyocera Ceramic Knife

Because the knives are made from ceramic they are very noticeably lighter than a comparable steel knife, this makes it highly advantageous if you are cutting a lot as it will reduce your muscle fatigue. This makes them an invaluable tool to chefs who are using them all day.

4 No Unwanted Tainting Of The Food

Fruit and Vegetables can sometimes pick up unwanted metallic taste off carbon steel knives, with ceramic blades this will never be a problem as ceramic will not react with your food.

5 Balance And Construction Of Knife

Because the blade is bonded with the handle it will never be a problem of the handle seperating from the blade. The finish is lovely and the balance is spot on.

The ceramic chef’s knife is an added bonus to either a professional kitchen or if you are just cooking at home.

Cooking College Meals on the Cheap

13 November, 2009 (04:38) | Cooking-Tips | By: Ryan Sullivan

You’re all settled into your dorm or college apartment and are likely feeling the pinch in your wallet of living away from home for the first time. With so many expenses to cover, food may need to take a step back on the priority list for the time being. Fear not, there are plenty of satisfying ways to eat without breaking the bank.

1. Ramen Noodles, Macaroni and Cheese, Pasta and Sauce. All you need is a microwave and you can have what is almost like a homemade meal. You can’t eat these starchy choices for every meal, but once a day won’t hurt too much. Be sure to add a fresh piece of fruit or a salad and you’re golden.

2. Eggs, cereal, waffles. Remember how many bowls of cereal Jerry Seinfeld put away on every episode of Seinfeld? Keep fresh milk on hand and have a bowl any time you want. There are usually coupons for the major brands, too. Breakfast foods are easy meals and they’re not just for morning anymore.

3. Sandwiches mean you don’t have to wash silverware. That’s right, finger foods are the way to go for the non-dishwasher crowd. There’s peanut butter, deli meat and even fried eggs to fill the gap between slices of bread. And, when you’re bored with that, crack open a can of tuna and make tuna salad. If you incorporate lettuce and tomato you’ll get your daily dose of vegetables too.

4. Frozen pizza. Don’t pick up that phone! Delivery pizza can be a budget buster for sure. There are plenty of options in your grocer’s freezer and almost all of them are under five dollars. Just sprinkle on some canned parmesan cheese and settle in for the night.

If these suggestions leave you a little flat, get creative and think of other ways to feed your cravings on a budget. Walk up and down the aisles at the store and you’ll surely come up with ideas.Meals need not be expensive to be good.

Get Your Food Tasting Fresher With The Help Of Oil Filtration

17 August, 2009 (04:16) | Food | By: Brad Swanson

by Brad Swanson

With the jumps in cooking technology, there have been major enhancements to the way food has been prepared. One of the primary goals most food corporations have attempted to do is maintaining consistency in food production. With cooking oil filtration systems becoming readily available and with lots conglomerates using these, food is prepared to categorical standards that are far more simply attained.

Oil Filtration Technology

Filtration technology to process and clean cooking oil has been around for a bit, but the technology has reached a point now where oil may be cleaned by as much as 90 nine percent. When food is cooked, there is a large amount of sediment left over in the oil caused by minute particles falling off into the oil. This causes the oil to become rancid, to modify in color and odor. This adversely has effects on the food being cooked in a frying range thru successive generations since these minute particles tend to adhere to the fresh food giving an overcooked odour, color and taste.

What the cooking oil filter accomplishes is to mechanically run oil between the frying range, through a number of ever smaller filters that trap particles and clean the oil. The filter then pumps the oil back into the frying range delivering cooking oil which has been scrubbed clean of particle matter. The result’s food being fried that looks, smells and tastes fantastic.

Benefits of using a cooking oil filtration system

Any chef will immediately testify to the indisputable fact that food cooked in fresh oil is finer in quality than food that’s prepared in cooking oil which has been used to fry food earlier. As discussed above the 1st benefit of employing a filtration system to clean oil is food that is consistent in quality. The absolute best restaurants and food manufacturing resources pride themselves in the consistency of the food they produce. Now, with cooking oil filtration systems becoming widely available, this consistency may be maintained by everyone.

Next, there is a good deal of time wasted on changing oil in the frying range. This is because, once cooking has become rancid to a point where it is simply useless, it’s got to be replaced. Replacing the oil means letting the oil cool so that it may be handled, it means emptying the range, cleaning the range and finally replacing the old oil with new. Cooking oil that is constantly cleaned by a filtration system increases the life of the oil in the frying range by almost 5 times. This implies that the frying range can now be steadily be used for five times longer.

There is also a massive cost advantage too here since by using the frying range longer and continuously, more food can be processed. This straight away increases the revenue the multinational stands to gain. Also, there’s an added increase in the amount of cash that is saved due to less oil changes. With oil being modified five times less, there is a fivefold saving in the money being spent on cooking oil.

Retooling the Cupboard: Six Kitchen Staples With Surprising Uses

5 August, 2009 (05:01) | Food | By: Matthew Kaplan

by Matthew Kaplan

Every pantry is stocked full of non-perishable staple items that do not go bad that we buy for those rare occasions when we need them in a recipe. For most people, the pantry is full of non-perishable items, canned goods and other food stuffs, and those food stuffs go mostly unused and dormant. Don’t let your pantry food staples go to waste. Cupboard kitchen staples are inexpensive and delicious and don’t deserve to stand idle in culinary purgatory. Kitchen staples can have some unique culinary applications. Follow these tips to learn how to add new and interesting touches to your meals with everyday kitchen staples.

Peanut Butter: In almost every pantry is a half-eaten jar of peanut butter. This cupboard staple is creamy and delicious, but most people only use peanut butter for sandwiches and dessert. The rich creaminess of peanut butter is also great in savory applications. Try using peanut butter to your next stir fry to give it a Thai-inspired flavor. Use peanut butter to make a peanut sauce that tastes great with pasta and vegetables.

Soy Sauce: Almost every East Asian dish calls for soy sauce. Soy sauce adds a slight nutty, salty taste to any dish, but most people only use soy sauce when cooking an Asian-style recipe. Soy sauce is a versatile ingredient that can work well in many recipes. Experiment with soy sauce and use it instead of salt in your favorite recipes to add some depth to the recipe. In particular, soy sauce tastes fantastic in barbecue sauces.

Almonds: Like with other nuts, people only buy almonds to snack on or for the occasional dessert. Almonds can be ground up into a fine powder to create almond flour, a tasty, protein-rich and gluten-free alternative to regular wheat flour. You can also blend almonds with water to make almond milk, a creamy beverage that is a delicious alternative to cow’s milk.

Bisquick: Originally intended for biscuits, Bisquick is used by many as the base to make pancakes at home. Bisquick has a wide variety of uses outside of just pancakes. Use Bisquick as part of the dry base ingredients for a wide variety of desserts, from cakes and pies to muffins and tarts. It also works great in casseroles.

Cashews: As is the case with almonds and other nuts, cashews have a wide array of culinary uses, but most people only use them in the occasional dessert at most. Besides being a delicious snack, cashews add a nice rich crunchiness to dishes like a stir fry, a pasta dish or even a casserole. You can also blend cashews in a food processor to create cashew butter, a delicious spread similar to peanut butter.

Cocoa Powder: This rich powder only gets used in most kitchens to add a bit of chocolate flavor to the occasional dessert. Do not let the chocolate flavor cocoa powder provides to go to waste. Use it as part of a homemade hot chocolate mix. Cocoa powder works particularly well in spicy applications, lending a sweet bitter note to a spicy recipe. Use cocoa powder to make an authentic Mexican mole sauce or add it to your favorite chili recipe.

My Favorite Baking Apple

29 June, 2009 (05:49) | Food | By: Cherie Carb

by Cherie Carb

I always wondered how to choose a great baking apple. I mean, what really should I look for? Well a great baking apple has two important characteristics: a tough outer skin and a mixed taste. What is a mixed taste? It is sweet and tart.

My favorite apple to use for baking is the Cortland. I get them in the fall of the year between September and April.

It is a cross breed apple from New York. It was developed in 1898 at a New York State Agricultural Experiment Station.

The name of the Cortland Apple came from the county in New York, Cortland County, which gets it’s name from Mr. Pierre Van Cortlandt.

Cortland County got its name from Mr. Pierre Van Cortland the President of the Convention who wrote the 1st Constitution for New York State. Mr. Pierre Van Cortland also served as lieutenant governor for the state as well. So the Cortland possesses a historic name in New York.

Cortland apple have a white, juicy flesh as where others have a yellow flesh. This makes them an appealing apple to serve as a garnish. The apples do not seem to discolor as quickly as other apples do.

Cortland Apples are great for baking of course, but also great served on a plate with cheese and crackers. They are great as garnishes. These apples tend not to color quickly which makes them a favorite as well.

A great baking apple should be tested for firmness. To do so, put the apple in your hand. Do not squeeze it but see if it is firm and heavy in weight. If so, then it is the one you want.

Also check it’s skin. Is the outer layer wrinkling? If so, pass on the apple. Make sure it has the tough skin. Because if it is wrinkling it was in the cold too long or not long enough.

To store your Cortlands, keep them as cool as possible. Best place is in the frig. Apples will not freeze unless temps are below 28 degrees F.

And if you are worried about them browning, do not fret! Take your slices or what have you, rub a bit of lemon juice all over and they will be great for awhile.

Enjoy these great apples today. There are other great baking apples too. Check your local orchards or produce stands. Taste on fresh off the tree, that is best anyway!
