Make The Most Of Any Kitchen Space

If you are one of those people who spend a lot of time cooking for your family, a well organized kitchen is essential. We have a few tips here that will make life easier for you, and your kitchen a far more attractive one.

We all have counter space, they are essential in any kitchen, there just never seems to be enough when we are cooking for a lot of people or are having a baking session. The best thing you can do if you have limited counter space is to keep it clean and clutter free.

So much valuable space is taken up with appliances and gadgets. You can get these to fit beneath the counters, so get these if you can. You’ll see plenty of space freed up instantly once you place them away from your counter tops.

Your drawer should always be properly organized and tidy do that you can just put your hand on whatever you need. Keep flatware and knives separate to avoid any possible injury.

Okay knives, we need good knives to cut and chop etc. I always recommend that you invest in a good set that are on a stand or in a block. They don’t take up much room and stay sharp and at hand.

When is a pan not a pan? When your food doesn’t cook evenly in it and you can’t get it clean! The choice of pots and pans available is staggering so ensure that you get the best ones for your usage.

Also make sure that you have enough pans to cook with, as there’s nothing worse than not having enough and end up doing something in the microwave oven.

Any gadget that cuts down on preparation time is ok by me. I am a professional cook and know how laborious food prepping can be. You want to get the actual cooking part as soon as possible.

We all know that feeling of being dog tired, but sleep just won’t come. It has the knock on effect of you being exhausted the next day and literally having to drag yourself from your bed. Here are a few things you can try to improve the situation.

We all have bedtime habits such as watching TV or surfing the bed, this makes your brain work hard as you are tired so it won’t switch off when you want it to.

You may have a favourite show you watch in bed, the thing is that because you enjoy it so much you will be concentrating hard on it. Your brain needs to be able to sleep so that you can.

Now this is a tip that students use when they need to study. Get yourself a non fiction book that is full of facts but has zero entertainment value. Your brain recognizes how boring this is and shuts itself down, enabling you to fall asleep.

Exercise is a good way of promoting a good night’s sleep. Really push yourself so both body and mind are exhausted. A good sleeping pattern should follow.

Resistance and cardio workouts are the best for this. Once the initial burst of energy has dissipated, your body will start and wind down until it just wants to go to sleep.

If your wear glasses or contacts, remove these before getting into bed, rather than once you are in it. There are a couple of reasons for doing this.

If you still have them on and force yourself to watch TV through tired eyes they will be harder to close. Your eyes will feel relaxed and more comfortable by taking them off beforehand.

We all know deep down that eating at night is bad for us, but it isn’t only the weight gain that’s a problem. Our brains are very clever and make associations. If you have got into the habit of eating at night, your brain will refuse to shut down until you have eaten as it will be thinking about what to have tonight. Cut out the snacks and sleep will come quicker.

If you’re a regular coffee drinker, this question has probably crossed your mind at one point in time. If you’re a constant worrier like I am, then it may cross your mind just about every day.

A great many of the world’s population are coffee drinkers. The taste of coffee certainly grows on you over time but it has another big advantage, too. When we’re feeling exhausted and nothing else can get us going, caffeine will come up trumps and give our energy levels a huge lift.

Numerous studies have shown the positive effects coffee can have on our mental agility, focus and productivity. If you would like to improve your performance at work, then get your hands on a cup of coffee!

It’s clear, then, that coffee has a positive effect on the way the brain functions. However, there are differing opinions as to whether coffee is good for the body as a whole. Some say it’s harmless, whereas others are convinced it can’t be beneficial.

Some studies will show that coffee may in fact raise blood pressure levels over time. This, coupled with the fact that heart rates increase with caffeine consumption, worries many people.

However, the same studies explain that this would only happen when people consumed large doses of caffeine on a very regular basis. One cup of coffee a day is not likely to create any adverse effects.

It has been proved that coffee beans contain antioxidants that help us ward off illness. They even lower our risk of contracting cancer. Coffee, like red wine, is a natural product, after all, so it comes as no surprise to discover they both have these properties.

When all is said and done, coffee should be consumed in moderation. Too much of anything is never a good thing, and you should treat any powerful stimulant with care, especially as you age.

Watch The pH Levels Of Your Soil

There are various soil mixtures out there, but the one that I’ve found has worked the best is one quarter yard soil, with the rest being a combination of sand and compost. This unique mixture will give your flowers a great base from which to start growing. Check the pH levels in your soil too. If it’s high in alkaline, nothing is going to grow.

Keeping Weeds Down

Raised bed gardens typically get the better of weeds, but that’s not to say that no one ever experiences the occasional weed here and there. Put in some organic mulch and use whatever weed guarding stuff you have in the house. If this doesn’t get rid of your weed infestation, remove them by hand. It’s simple and not really time consuming. Throw some more mulch over the top and see what happens overnight. Keep in mind this is an ongoing fight, so there will be victories and there will be losses.

Water The Appropriate Amounts

Manual watering is the way to go, making sure to hit the areas where your plants are inserted into the soil rather than the surrounding areas. If you feel extravagant, pick up an easy irrigation system with a drip technology that will keep your plants happy. Overhead watering is dangerous, as your plants can easily remain wet for too long and end up succumbing to disease. Water your plants decently, but don’t hose them.

Easy Maintenance

The best part about raised bed gardening is that it doesn’t take a whole lot of maintenance to keep them looking nice. As long as you water your plants regularly and distribute organic matter and turn over the soil periodically, you should be fine.

If there are any signs of disease, simply empty your garden and put down new soil for your plants and you’re good to go. As long as it looks good and the veggies keep growing, you should be fine.

Soups to Prepare and Love

If you’re short on ideas for an appetizer, you might want to consider making a soup at home. It’s light, it warms the body, and the right ones are absolutely delicious. I have a whole cabinet full of recipes and I’d like to share some ideas with you.

There are so many different things you can do with soup, and people often seem to overlook the many possibilities. Having prepared hundreds of different kinds of soup, I’ve done my best to make what some people believe to be a boring dish a very interesting one.

Butternut squash is a great soup, but I like mine even more with apples in it. Mincing some apples with this soup makes it delicious, but I’d go one step further and puree them. This is one of my favorite soups out there and I believe you’ll love it too.

2. Broccoli soup with cheddar cheese croutons. You’ve probably had the broccoli and cheddar combo on its own, but the cheese flavored crouton here is a game changer.

3. Potato nugget soup. You can prepare the potato any way you want, but I would suggest baking it to keep it healthy. Boiling the potato is another way to go, as it’ll naturally boil while being cooked with the soup anyway.

Pumpkin is in season right now and people love a good pumpkin soup. Making one of these from a fresh pumpkin can be absolutely delicious. There are a number of different ways this can be served, both hot and cold. Use your imagination and get creative with the many possibilities.

Lastly, a cream of turkey soup with turkey dumplings inside. This requires a bit more work, but it’s such a great soup and my personal favorite. If you have the energy to pull this off and you like turkey, then I know how you’ll feel about this soup.

There’s a good chance that one of the above soups may appeal to you. If I haven’t done my job, keep on thinking and I’m sure that any one of these ideas could ultimately lead to something else.

Stumptown’s Incredible Coffee Has Me Thirsting for More

I’m a New Yorker and I love my coffee. With so many options around, it’s easy to get caught up with one or two convenient places, overlooking some of the many great purveyors around.

Most recently, I found a new place that’s won my heart, as I believe it may very well have the best coffee I’ve ever had. I know that I’m not alone when I say that too.

The store has its origins in Portland, Oregon, with a few locations throughout the city and some others in Seattle. The founder of the chain moved to New York, and that’s all to our benefit, as the first of a few planned branches has opened here.

I’ve tried both the iced house brew, as well as the regular coffee, and both are phenomenal. These are some of the best beans I’ve ever tasted, and they really give me quite the energy kick.

The prices are reasonable, and most comparable to those you’d find at Starbucks, but the coffee itself seems to be of a much higher grade. There’s also a nice early 20th century theme going on, as the baristas dress in traditional gear.

I’ve read reviews online after trying Stumptown’s coffee to see if others feel the same way that I do. What I found was that many Seattle residents swear by the chain, calling it the best coffee that Seattle has to offer.

In a city like Seattle, there’s so much great coffee. That’s one of the city’s claims to fame. If avid coffee drinkers are claiming that this is the best around, I’d say that’s a pretty high quality endorsement right there.

If you have a Stumptown near you, consider yourself lucky and try it out. If you don’t, hope that the chain expands, and take advantage of any traveling opportunity you may get and try it out.

Ways To Lower Anxiety

Skimming through Real Simple magazine at the check out line of the supermarket, I came across Dr. Robert Leahy’s “10 Ways to Cope with Anxiety.” Dr. Leahy is the director of the American Institute for Cognitive Therapy and the author of many books on the subject. His suggestions will help you calm your nerves:

1) Repeat your worry until you’re bored silly.

“take the troublesome thought that’s nagging at you and say it over and over, silently, slowly, for 20 minutes. It’s hard to keep your mind on a worry if you repeat it that many times.”

Dr. Leahy calls this technique “the boredom cure. “Behavioral scientists call it ‘flooding’. I’m not so keen about this technique for my extremely anxious patients who are having trouble regulating their thoughts and emotions. If your anxiety is on the milder side, however, and you have the courage to do this, I recommend you think about your worries while practicing relaxation techniques to keep your body as calm as possible.

2) Make it worse.

“When you try too hard to control your anxieties, you only heighten them. Instead exaggerate them and see what happens.”

This is a good one. When I suggest it to my patients I call it the ‘Bring it on’ technique or ‘Fake it ’til you make it’. By inviting what scares you, you learn on your time that you can survive your fears instead of waiting to be bushwhacked by them.

Sports psychologists use this all the time. When I was terrified my horse would shy and dump me on the ground, my coach told me to stop trying to keep my mare from bolting. Instead she told me expect her to shy, to look forward to it. That attitude helped me relax and so did the horse.

3) Don’t fight the craziness.

“You mayhave thoughts that lead you to think you’ll do something terribleor that you’re going insane Remember – our minds are creativeevery now and then ‘crazy’ thoughts jump out. Everyone has them.”

In the weeks after my first child was born, when I was exhausted, sleep deprived and in the grips of baby blues, I had thoughts of throwing my screaming baby out the window. Those thoughts terrified me. Tearfully, I confessed my horrible thoughts to my mother who shrugged and said, “We all think something like that at some time. You didn’t act on it, did you?” She assured me I wasn’t crazy. I could relax.

My patients are sometimes surprised when I suggest they allow themselves to imagine doing something outrageous like throwing a banana cream pie at their nasty boss’s puss. Unleashing our creative minds may be just what we need to de-stress.

4) Recognize false alarms.

“Many thoughts and sensations that we interpret as cues for concern-even panic-are just background noise. Think of each of them [rapid heart beat, tensing of muscles] as a fire engine going to another place.”

5) Turn your anxiety into a movie.

“..imagine that your anxious thoughts are a show while you sit in the audience, eating popcorn, a calm observer.”

This is a good way to exercise ‘detachment,’ stepping outside of the anxiety just enough to keep your thinking brain working. Another technique I suggest is to imagine the worry happening to a friend, not you. Then imagine talking to your friend. What would you say to them? How can you be supportive?

6) Set aside worry time.

“Try setting aside 20 minutes everyday-let’s say 4:30 PM-just for your worries. If you are fretting at 10 AM, jot down the reason and resolve to think about it later. By the time 4:30 comes around, many of your troubles won’t even matter anymore.”

7) Take your hand off the horn.

“When you desperately try to take command of things that can’t be controlled, you’re more like the swimmer who panics and slaps the water screaming Instead, imagine that you are floating along on the water with your arms spread outIt’s a paradox, but when you surrender to the moment, you actually feel far more in control.”

Breathe it out.

“Focusing on breathing is a common but effective technique for calming the nerves.”

This a classic, oldy, but goody. If you do it right, deep, mindful breathing is better than Valium.

9) Make peace with time.

“Every feeling of panic comes to an end, every concern eventually wears itself out, every so-called emergency seems to evaporate.”

When we are in the midst of a panic attack we feel it will last forever or else we will die. Remembering the fact that panic attacks and anxiety in milder form is finite, usually not lasting more than ten minutes. Dr. Leahy also counsels:

“Ask yourself, ‘How will I feel about this in a week or a month?’ This one, too, really will pass.”

10) Don’t let your worries stop you from living your life.

“What can you still do even if you feel anxious? Almost anything.”

Parents Of Balloon Boy

This past week we saw the news media captivated by the idea that a 6-year-old boy, Falcon Heene had been carried off by a weather balloon. That is until the boy was later found in his own garage attic and shortly thereafter it was revealed on a television news show that the entire incident was likely a hoax. In replying to a reporter’s question, the young Falcon turned to his dad on camera and said, “You guys said that, umm, we did this for the show.” Oops.

The parents – Richard Heene and Mayumi Heene – have all along claimed it was not a hoax or a publicity stunt. Now, according to The New York Times, the parents will voluntarily surrender to police as soon as charges are filed, which is expected to happen on Wednesday.

While the truth continues to unfold, the police in the investigation have concluded it was likely indeed a publicity stunt: “We have evidence to indicate it was a publicity stunt done with the hope of marketing themselves to a reality-television show sometime in the future,” said Larimer County sheriff Jim Alderden on Sunday afternoon at a news conference in Fort Collins, Colorado.

So that leaves us with the inevitable question – what could possibly psychologically motivate parents to use their child’s very life in order to further themselves?

We see clues to the answer in some other information that’s trickling out about the parents. ABC News noted that former business partner Barbara Slusser – who chased hurricanes and other storms with the Heenes – that they parted ways when Slusser felt that the Heenes often put their kids in harm’s way. Slusser told ABC News, “The last straw for us was when Hurricane Gustav and Hurricane Ike were heading toward the Texas coastline and Heene wanted to go back there and take the kids.”

So we seem to have a set of parents who already don’t quite understand the idea of how to raise children in a safe, responsible and thoughtful manner, thinking nothing of storm-chasing hurricanes and tornadoes with their young children in tow. Storm-chasing, of course, can be a very dangerous and unpredictable endeavor. One of the reasons adults do it is for the thrill of the unpredictability of the storm – putting oneself in harm’s way to experience a ferocious component of nature. But your children? They aren’t old enough to make such decisions for themselves – they trust their parents’ good judgment and experience.

But an account on Gawker by someone who worked with Richard Heene sheds even more light on the Heenes’ motivation – money and additional fame. This was a family that had been on the television program, Wife Swap, and they had already tasted celebrity. They wanted more of it.
