10 Steps For Cooking-Up Family Memories

31 August, 2010 (05:58) | Recipes | By: Alfred Lancer

The kitchen is the perfect place for making memories. When you spend time baking, cooking and enjoying meals with your family, you create happy memories you and your children will cherish forever.

The benefits of preparing and enjoying food as a family are clear. You save money and eat healthier meals. You create opportunities to connect and communicate with your children and spouse. And most importantly, you show love for your family when you spend time cooking and eating with them. Children of all ages need your attention and your time. By working together to create a meal or bake a batch of cookies, you spend valuable time together.

So, here are 10 steps to get your family cooking up memories.

Step 1: Teach small children the fun of cooking by helping them bake cookies and cakes. If you are short on time, you can use a boxed cookie mix and spend more time decorating.

Step 2: Encourage the littlest ones to play pretend cooking. Kids love to play with real mixing bowls, strainers and wooden spoons. These make harmless toys and can be easily thrown in the dishwasher for quick cleanup.

Step 3: If you live by your day-timer, schedule in baking cookies with your kids. Our schedules can be so hectic that something as simple as baking a batch of chocolate chip cookies can get skipped over. Write it down and do it.

Step 4: If you have teenagers, let them play their favorite music while they wash the lettuce and set the table.

Step 5: Work together with your spouse to prepare the dinner and use the time to catch up on each other’s day.

Step 6: Even if you are in a rush preparing dinner, remember to reduce your stress and focus on creating a fun atmosphere that naturally encourages the whole family to participate.

Step 7: When spending time preparing food with your children, include lessons about healthy eating choices. Keep the conversation positive and avoid listing foods they can’t have.

Step 8: On days where you anticipate time will be tight, consider taking a short cut by using a frozen stir-fry mix or pasta with a jar of pre-made sauce. Your family will appreciate your relaxed mood much more than a made-from-scratch dinner.

Step 9: Share the job of grocery shopping. One week have mom take one of the children as a helper, the next week dad can go with another child. Always work from a grocery list and let your children help you retrieve items and cross them off the list.

Step 10: Have big family meals where you share about your day. Keep the conversation fun and avoid negative lectures over dinner. Remember to laugh.

Take these steps today and make your kitchen a fun and memorable place for your whole family.

Dinner For The Family

6 August, 2010 (06:35) | Coffee | By: Bill Jones

At the dinner table is a great time for familys to get together and enjoy some quality time with each other. It’s actually been proven that family’s who eat together seem to have a better chance of having a better relationship with each other, and this is very important to have.

Having a good family dinner all starts with the meal that is prepared. It’s not going to be a good dinner if not everyone enjoys the meal. I know that it’s hard to try and please everyone with just one meal, but it can be done. There are many different types of foods that can be choosen from.

Let’s take chicken as an example. This of course only applies if your whole family likes chicken, but there are literally hundreds of ways to prepare chicken. There’s barbaqued chicken, grilled chicken, fried chicken, and many many more. There’s usually always a way to make chicken that everyone enjoys.

Another thing that’s also good to have at family dinners is to have desserts. In most familys desserts are reserved for various special occaions, but you should try to make dessert once a week for your family. I guarantee that you’ll feel better about it if you do.

One good thing to make for dessert is homemade pudding. Pudding is very easy to make and many people like pudding. If you want to be more creative then you can take the pudding and put grahm crackers underneath of the layer of pudding. This tastes very good.

You can also make brownies as a dessert. Brownies are essentially like pudding in that they are easy to make and are liked by almost everyone. Brownies can also be gotten for relatively cheap to, so it’s a cheap dessert also like pudding.

Cooking: Five Tips

27 July, 2010 (06:24) | Recipes | By: Owen Jones

There can not be many individuals who do not like their food, but the human race, being what it is, I expect that there are a few of them. However, for the remainder of us, cuisine is a font of daily enjoyment and, like drink, it is frequently used to denote a celebration. not only that, but various foodstuffs are used for the various meals or distinct celebrations.

Festive meals were undoubtedly planned around the seasonal foodstuffs available, but a number of foods were ferried enormous distances for the benefit of those who could afford them. For example, my father deemed it a grand treat to get an orange in his stocking on Christmas Day sixty years back. How the times have altered! Very few kids would think an orange a present, special or not, any day of the year in our time.

Nevertheless, the storage of food is still a daily concern and subsequently, I have written a few good tips on preserving food underneath, so that you will obtain the best from that which you have purchased or grown in your garden even a long while later.

Chicken Stuffed With Spoons: a great way of preparing chicken to be eaten at a cold buffet or in sandwiches, is to put as many spoons as possible into the cavity of the chicken (not silver or plated ones though). Then, place the chicken in a large saucepan or pot and bring the water to the boil slowly. Simmer for 10 minutes, cover and leave until the water is room temperature. The spoons will retain the heat and cook the chicken from the inside out. it will be one of the most succulent chickens you have ever eaten.

Roasted Crisp And Light: if you like crisp-skinned roasties, it is best to parboil them first, but that is only half the story. so, boil the potatoes for five minutes and drain thoroughly. Put the lid on the pan and shake it about violently. Bang it hard on the chopping block several times. The harder the better. Then put the parboiled potatoes in the baking tray with the meat or fowl to cook as you would normally.

Salad Soup: Do not throw away salad that has been soaked in salad dressing. Whisk it up in a food processor with a can of tomatoes of tinned soup. Add lots of garlic to taste and adjust the thickness to suit your taste. Chill it down and you will have one of the most delicious summer soups ever.

Curdling Cure: if your mayonnaise has curdled there is one sure fire way to bring it back to life. stir in a couple of tablespoons of Hellmann’s mayonnaise and your problem will be over.

Simply Scrumptious Topping: a really, quick, delicious and almost infinitely variable topping for a savory pie can be made in seconds. Choose the flavour you want from the crisp rack; puncture the bag to let our the air and then crush the contents in the gag. it really adds something to a pie. The same trick can be used on the bottom of a potato pie a Texan housewife told me.

What Is Kettle Corn Popcorn?

11 June, 2010 (07:29) | Food | By: Jacob Biggs

I can remember my first time at the fair, my mother and father were there and my little brother came along as well. Not only was I excited to try the rides, which I had never experienced before, I also was more ex tactic than ever about this sweet treat called kettle corn popcorn that my mother and father kept talking about.

The easiest way to make your own is to use oil, popcorn kernels, white sugar and a pan with a lid. Of course you need a stove or something that will get hot enough to heat up the kernels to their popping stage. Once you add the oil and the white sugar you put a lid on the pan and make sure to shake up the pan enough so that the sugar does not burn.

If brown sugar is used you will get more of a caramel corn. So to stick with the kettle popcorn taste you will want to stick with white sugar instead of using the brown sugar, unless you are looking for more of a caramel corn. If you are someone who enjoys the popcorn balls (which seem to only come out around Halloween) then you will love Kettle Corn.

Not only is it a great snack for adults, but children of all ages love it just the same. If you ever go to a fair, there are usually a few vendors which offer kettle corn or popcorn balls. If you have never tried this wonderful treat, you should give it a try and see what you think. It never hurts to try some kind of food that is new.

There are several recipes on the internet which you can try if you want to spice up your kettle popcorn. There are ways you can add color to the corn instead of just having white. In order to add color you should add a couple drops of food coloring to the sugar and oil before you put the kernels in, you mix it all up and then add the kernels.

Kettle corn may not be your thing, and if it is not then you are not alone, there are some people which do not prefer anything sweet or any kind of popcorn at all. So, do not feel alone if you are one of the few.

Maybe you do not want to make your own Kettle corn popcorn, if not you can simply buy a bag from a local grocery store. Sometimes the grocery stores will have theirs pre-made in a bag and sometimes you have to buy it in a bag that you stick in the microwave. Either way, don’t forget to give this wonderful sweet treat a try.

How To Brew A Fiery Mexican Hot Sauce

10 June, 2010 (06:54) | Food | By: Winky Pepperbottom

Hot sauce has been a cherished dinner table staple for hundreds of years. The condiment can be made from nearly any pepper on the planet and therefore there are sauces available for just about anyone’s palette. No two sauces made from different hot peppers will taste the same so discovering your favorite can be a tasty journey. Once you do find your favorite, you can keep your addiction cheap by making the sauce yourself.

The most important aspect of making hot sauce is the peppers. Each type of pepper will yield a different result. For people who prefer milder sauces, Jalapenos and Poblanos should be used. More adventurous eaters will enjoy the hotness that Habanero and Serrano peppers provide.

After you have picked the kinds of hot peppers you will be using, round up the rest of the ingredients. Depending on how spicy or bland you want the mixture to be, you will require anywhere from 1 to 2 pounds of the hot peppers. You will also need chopped red peppers, a large onion, and canned or fresh tomato sauce. Vinegar and fresh garlic will also be required, for added taste.

To start, chop your onion into penny sized chunks. You will be mixing them in a blender soon, so they do not have to be super tiny. Mince the clove of fresh garlic and put these two ingredients aside for the time being.

It’s now time to blend the onions and fresh garlic into the canned tomato sauce. Slice the hot peppers into smaller chunks and add them to this mixture too. Remember that the number of hot peppers used is directly related to the sauce’s heat and intensity. It is also a great idea to use rubber gloves while touching them to keep from getting any on skin or in your eyes. Add the sliced peppers to the tomato sauce mixture.

Mix all of the ingredients in a blender until no large lumps can be seen. Pour everything into a large cooking pot and heat the mixture over the stove until it begins boiling. Remove from heat after adding a fair amount of vinegar and stir the pot thoroughly.

The sauce will need to be stored in an airtight bottle or jar. You can purchase new jars from a department store or use rinsed out condiment bottles. You can enjoy and easily store your hot sauce after it has been bottled. Anything goes great with hot sauce. Everything from mashed potatoes to scrambled eggs can benefit from the right sauce.

Keep in mind that when picking hot peppers to keep your personal heat tolerance in mind. Do your research and discover which peppers are just too spicy for you and which are perfect. You can even sample small bits of different hot peppers before you start the cooking so you will be sure ahead of time just what kind of sauce you will be able to stand. Even if you like the kick of Habanero’s, do not go crazy with how much you use. And finally, make certain that your newly made hot sauce is properly bottled to keep it from becoming dried out or seeping onto your skin or other food products.

Winky Pepperbottom is an expert author who fanatically writes about hot sauce especially red hot sauce .

Cooking With Charcoal Lighter Fluid Can Be Good Or Bad

9 February, 2010 (09:03) | Food | By: Walther Jeni

As humans, we all make mistakes. It is human nature to do so, and cannot be prevented each and every time. When it comes to barbequing, this rule is no different. We often make mistakes that we do not even realize until we taste our food, or something potentially dangerous happens.

Some mistakes just mean that the food you cook is not going to taste very good, while others could potentially mean a trip to the hospital, or a visit from your claims representative on your home insurance policy. No matter the severity of the mistake, you should do your best to try to refrain them whenever possible.

You must properly prepare the meat you are cooking, before cooking it. You should never attempt to cook meat on a grill when it is still frozen, or even partially frozen.

Once meat is cooked, never put it back in on the same plate you had it on when it was raw. This could cause the spread of many unwanted illnesses. Cooking with charcoal lighter fluid can be good or bad. The lighter fluid will cause the food you are cooking to taste different then with other types of grills.

Never poke you meat while it is cooking. Poking holes in meat will cause the juice inside to leak out into the bottom of the grill. Not only will this make your food dry and unappealing in the end, but it also could potentially ruin your barbeque grill.

Once the meat is on the grill, try not to open the lid to many times. Each time you open the lid, you change the temperature in the grill. The constant change in temperature and the air flow will cause your meat to dry up quickly. Remember that the higher the heat is not always the better.

While using tin foil or aluminum foil will make cleaning easier, it will cause your food to have more of a fried taste then a grilled taste. Never, under any circumstance, should you leave a grill alone when it is in use. Grilling does have fire involved, and accidents can happen. Fire spreads quickly, so being aware of your grill could mean the difference between a small fire that is quickly extinguished, and a visit from the fire department.

Never place a hot grill against a wall, even if the fire is already completely out. A hot grill can heat up an exterior wall to the point of combustion. Also, do not put the grill cover back on until you are sure that the grill is completely cool. You grill should be cleaned after each and every use, no exceptions. While no one likes cleaning the grill, it is essential for the life and safety of your grill. If you allow your grill to sit dirty, not only are you causing a potential fire and health hazard, but you are ultimately making it harder on yourself when it does come time to clean your grill.

Make sure that your grill is completely cold before cleaning it. Spraying oil and cleaning agents on a hot surface could cause it to ignite. Be careful, because the grill may seem cool, but may still be hot in certain areas. You do not want to sustain a burn.

Weighing Green Mountain Coffee Pods Against Other Options

29 January, 2010 (09:22) | Coffee | By: Stacy Garnet

One of the more popular brands of coffee pods available, Green Mountain Coffee Pods aren’t really coffee pods at all. They are, in fact, K-Cups. This is to say they only work in Keurig’s K-Cup brewers. So, if you are looking for regular coffee pods, stop right there, because you won’t find any such offerings from Green Mountain. However, if you’re interested in a new brand of K-Cup to try in your Keurig brewer, than read on.

Green Mountain Coffee Is Quite Green

With a name like green mountain, you would think that the company was rather old and from Ireland or something. In reality, Green Mountain Coffee was founded in Vermont in 1981. This makes them very new to the coffee world, especially with older companies having been around since the mid 1800s. The company actually started as a tiny cafe in rural Waitsfield, Vermont, where they roasted and served coffee. It didn’t take long before local restaurants began clamoring to buy Green Mountain Coffee to serve in their own establishments.

What Makes Green Mountain Special?

Green Mountain Coffees managed to grow very quickly in an extremely competitive industry. How were they able to distinguish themselves? Well, there’s a myriad of reasons they’re different, but let’s focus on flavors and selections. Green Mountain Coffees does not try to compete with the big guys whose bread and butter is traditional and decaf type offerings. They do provide a French roast, a breakfast blend, and their “Our Blend”, that all of the coffee shops in Vermont were begging for at one point, but they also have a ton of unique offerings. At the time of this writing, Green Mountain Coffees produced more than 100 different coffees under a handful of labels.

Will Green Mountain Coffees Work In My Pod Coffee Maker?

Since Green Mountain Coffee makes only Keurig K-Cups, they’re not going to fit in the standard coffee pod brewer. Green Mountain likely won’t ever make a normal coffee pod, as you would find in the Home Cafe system, so the standard coffee pod machine will probably remain out of luck. This is because, a few years ago, Green Mountain Coffees actually bought Keurig. It’s quite likely that this is the whole reason that K-Cups have been such a hit, even though they’re different from normal pod coffee makers. If you’re really bent on making it work, or if you just enjoy making your own coffee pods, you could always purchase Green Mountain’s loose coffee and do it that way.

Other Green Mountain Products

Green Mountain does have products other than coffees, although only a few actually bear the Green Mountain Coffee label. Under the Celestial Seasonings label, they offer various teas, while under the Cafe Escapes label, there are a few different types of hot chocolate. None of these offerings are available as anything other than K-Cups, however.
