Caviar – Environmentally Friendly Options And How To Serve

28 August, 2010 (03:46) | Food | By: Alfred Lancer

Salted roe of sturgeon and other varieties of fish are popularly known as caviar. It is a delicacy used as a spread or garnish and with hors d’oeuvres. Caviar is a deviate of the Persian word Khag-avar which means “the roe generator” referring to roe of the sturgeon.

There is good news for environmentally conscious American citizens who also happen to be connoisseurs of caviar. Now new varieties of caviars are available which are produced from paddlefish and sturgeon farmed in the US. They taste good and at the same time are environmentally sustainable. The development of American caviar also addresses the worries of consumers and culinary experts about the decline of sturgeon in the Caspian Sea.

Caspian Sea Sturgeon is the major source for the caviar needs of the world. Sturgeons produce the famous beluga. Due to illegal trade, pollution, over fishing and habitat loss, there is a severe down spiral in the population of sturgeon in the Caspian Sea.

SeaWeb, Pew Institute for Ocean Science and Natural Resources Defense Council of University of Miami is urging the American consumers to support American caviars as a better alternative and to safeguard the endangered species of the Caspian Sea.

The caviars from Missouri and California are prominently supported by consumers, renowned chefs and media organizations.

Jacques Pepinand and Rick Moonen who are leading chefs of New York’s Restaurant RM and San Francisco’s Traci des Jardins of Jardiniere removed Caspian Sea caviars from their menu and replaced them with American caviars in an effort to help the environmental groups protecting the Caspian Sea sturgeons.

Most of the party givers would like to know how much caviar should be bought for their party. It depends on the number of guests attending the party and how the caviar is going to be served. With every ounce of caviar, you can serve 8 to 10 guests. Quarter teaspoon or less of caviar can be used for garnishing purposes. With caviar on top of an appetizer and to enhance the taste of caviar predominantly, use half a teaspoon.

Caviar should not be opened until it is needed. Leftovers should be promptly covered and stored in the fridge to be used within a couple of days.

If the taste of the caviar is to be retained, do not freeze it. When you freeze the caviar the roe membrane of the caviar gets toughened and the flavor is altered. If you do freeze it, slowly defrost the frozen caviar in the fridge for at least a day or two before you serve. Caviar should be refrigerated at 28 to 32 degrees by putting the tin in the meat shelf or surrounding the bowl containing caviar with ice.

Greek Recipes – Awesome Range Of Greek Sweets

26 August, 2010 (06:38) | Recipes | By: Mary Edwards

Greek desserts come in many varieties and can be made using a range of ingredients and ways, but in this article we’ll lay out some that are both easy to make and delicious to eat. They make wonderful gifts, or to serve to guest or satisfy a sweet tooth. The hardest part of any of these recipes is the Greek name. Each is a traditional Greek favorite and each is simple to prepare (one needs no stove time whatsoever). Listed alphabetically.

Honey Puffs – Loukoumathes (Loukoumades) Loukkoumathes is a form of honey puff that’s an integral a part of New Year’s and Christmas tradition. The Greek Jewish community also includes these small honeyed puffs at Hanukkah. They are quick and easy to make – 20 min start to finish. Serve hot or warm, and drizzle with honey just before serving.

Semolina Pudding – Halvas Halvas made using semolina, nuts, raisins, and cinnamon is a delightful, grainy textured dessert, and one of the more famous Greek sweets. This version is cooked on the stove, placed in a mold to shape, and served at room temperature. The recipe makes a reasonably large quantity, so it really works well for several gifts. Just divide the pudding among several decorative molds!

Sesame Honey Candy – Pasteli Pasteli is a much loved Greek candy, and can be —————- a a range of seeds and nuts. Called “the original energy bar,” this traditional recipe calls for sesame seeds and honey and creates a chewy candy, perfect with tea or for an energy boost. To wrap for gift-giving, use cellophane.

Sugared Almond Cookies – Kourabiethes Honey and sesame paste are 2 of the popular ingredients found in many Greek desserts. This no-cook recipe is simple and easy to make, and packed in small jars, makes an exquisite gift from your kitchen. With fewer calories than peanut butter, it’s healthy and delicious. Spread on bread like jam or preserves, or use in sandwiches (delicious with bananas), and enjoy!

Traditional Greek Spoon Sweets (Preserves) – Glyka Koutaliou Spoon sweets are much like preserves, made with fruit, nuts, or vegetables, cooked with sugar to generate a thick syrup. Because they’re so sweet, these are served by the spoonful, hence the name. A traditional offering to guests, spoon sweets can also be used as dessert sauces and condiments. They are easy to make – by and large a matter of boiling the fruit with sugar. Decorative jars stuffed with these treasures are delightful gifts.

Some Cola Myths Are Cleared Here

24 August, 2010 (05:06) | Food | By: Henrique Hammer

As many of us know, Coca-Cola is one of the most popular drinks in the world.

It tastes fantastic, and it’s wonderful for when you really need something refreshing to drink, indeed loved by many.

Thats why there are many of us worldwide who love it.

Cola was invented by a pharmacist called Angelo Mariani in 1863. Since it has been around for this long, it became subject of some urban legends and myths.

Although some of this myths are believable, others are completely jokes.

Since i am one of those millions of people that love cola, in the following paragraphs i’ll attempt to clear a few of this myths.

Myth 1 – “Cola contains Cochineal, a bug dye” – This can be a weird one.

You should have guessed yourself.

If you do not know what Cochineal is, let me explain you: it is an organic food dye made from a very small bug. Argh, my dear god.. but know what, that’s not in the cola.

Myth 2 – “Cola is very acidic, so if you left a penny or a piece of meat in it, it will dissolve overnight” – Lots of people believe that this myth is true, probably because it sounds real.

You may have heard the story about the fly that wonders into the cup of cola and the next day it has been eaten away by the acidity of the drink.

It is true that cola can dissolve some materials, but that takes a lot more than one night.

For example take orange juice, it’s also very acidic and it’ll dissolve a material in about the same time as cola would.

Myth 3 – “The Aluminum from Cola cans can lead to Alzheimer’s disease” – I can understand that some people might believe in this one, but that is not true.

First of all there is no there was never confirmed that aluminum could cause Alzheimer disease.

Even if there was a link between your aluminum and Alzheimer disease, all cola cans are lacquered on the inside to prevent any contact between the aluminum and the drink.

There are many more obviously, but these are the ones that bothered me the most, knowing these I can now drink my cola without worry!

The Real ABC’s Associated With The Earthenware, Stoneware, And Porcelain Dinner Set

23 August, 2010 (03:23) | Food | By: Di Smyth

So you are thinking about ordering a replacement dinner set for a domicile. Dinner sets are very in demand nowadays. By way of example, look at the following phrases that people are now typing into the major search engines:

dinner set,dinner sets,dinnerware set,corelle dinner set,square dinner set,dinner setting,white dinner set,china dinner set,black dinner set,red dinner set,cheap dinner sets,porcelain dinner set,stoneware dinner set,mikasa dinner set,dinner settings,fine china dinner set,correll dinner set,corelle dinner set sale,dinner set table,earthenware dinner set,full dinner set,corelle dinner set deals,dinner set deals,formal dinner set,dinner set brands,dinner set online,a dinner set,dinner set prices,family dinner set,home dinner set,japan dinner set,pattern dinner set,pieces dinner set,style dinner set .

Why don’t we take a look in your traditional kitchen. You will see many different bowls, dishes, mugs, and also glasses, but have you ever previously stopped to think about precisely what they are probably made out of? Your normal dinner set is created from 3 main substances, namely earthenware, stoneware, and porcelain. Most of us have heard of all of these materials before, yet have no idea what precisely the particular differences are. This ınformation is designed to help to shed a bit of light on this matter…

The Subject of Earthenware

Earthenware typically is “low-fired” clay. This white along with porous clay is fired with a minimal temperature, usually around’15 degrees Fahrenheit. It is many times recognized as “ceramics” or “ceramic ware”.

The Subject of Stoneware

Compared with Earthenware, Stoneware is really a “high-fired” clay. Customarily fired at about 2185 degrees Fahrenheit, it should be a great deal more robust due to this fact. Because of this particular firing, it becomes vitreous (i.e.: will become like glass), and it is tough and chip-resistant.

The Subject of Porcelain

A number of different items are used to produce porcelain. The main material is usually a pale clay, like china white. Other materials which are involved are: glass, feldspar, along with granite…which can be ground, and then included in the clay. Standard water is added to help make the blend a lot easier to work with. Worked into the desired form, the combination is then fired inside of a bisque kiln (at a average heat). Following glazing and then a “high-temperature” firing, the result is usually a bit of pottery that is both clear and delicate.

Evaluating the Difference

Since we understand a tiny bit about each and every one, how do we tell them apart? Here’s the process:

1) Is it porcelain? The very first thing to be aware of is this : porcelain is going to be translucent, while stoneware and even earthenware will not be. Show the particular item up to the light. Is it possible to witness the light shimmering through? In that case, then it is actually porcelain.

2) Assuming you have come this far, you’re sure it is either stoneware or earthenware. What’s the following test? Precisely how hefty is the item? If it is rather hefty pertaining to its dimensions, then it is quite possibly stoneware.

3) Stoneware also offers the “appearance” associated with hand-made pottery. Therefore stoneware should have a texture to it. Earthenware is not going to.

4) Does the particular object you’re holding have a chip in it? If so, analyze it. Do you find it incredibly white and also “chalky” looking? Can you scrape away more substance employing your fingernail? If so, it may be almost certainly earthenware. I mention this for the reason that earthenware, as soon as fired, shows a white, chalky look. Stoneware, on the flip side, features a darker, textured overall look.

5) In case some part of the product has become unglazed, then precisely what can you see? If you should observe textured clay, it follows that this particular piece is undoubtedly stoneware.

Did you enjoy this specific little trip in the universe connected with dinner set materials? We all at present recognize that porcelain, earthenware, and stoneware are often the three principal types. More info regarding dinner sets is offered in our web site.

Want to find a wonderful dinner set? Our web site will help you locate that porcelain dinner set for your gift list.

Safest Flatware Is The Best. Choose Quality Over Cost

20 August, 2010 (04:16) | Food | By: Gabriel Carpenter

The purpose of food is to provide fuel to human beings. However, eating food has become a ritual for us. We never eat just to sate our hunger. We eat to sate our senses as well. That is why we like our food to not just taste good but look appetizing as well.

We all started eating with our hands. No other body part served the purpose of taking the food to our mouths as our hands did. Soon, different cultures adopted different eating habits. Some retained use of hands to eat, other came up with chopsticks while some opted for flatware i.e. knives, spoons, and forks etc.

There is a lot of choice as far as knives, spoons, and forks are concerned. For daily use, we prefer plastic or stainless steel products while formal occasions often see our silverware adding to the grandeur of the occasion.

Your choice of flatware will determine whether you eat healthy or not. Cheap and poor quality flatware may look good but you may end up eating contaminated food despite hygienic preparations. To brush our teeth and wash our hands before our meals is of no use if our spoons and forks contaminate our diet.

Further, almost all those who go in for quality flatware want easy to clean products. In today’s fast paced world where time is a luxury, we cannot afford to spend a lot of time cooking food, eating it and cleaning up afterwards.

There are many brands available that offer quality flatware. One popular choice is Pfaltzgraff flatware products. An individual may opt for a single piece to meet his or her individual requirements. However, those who are starting families often go in for a flatware set. Avoid silverware for daily use. They are difficult to clean on a daily basis. Instead, opt for stainless flatware which will help you save time on cleaning up after your meal. A quick search for flatware online will help you identify the best deals without even stepping out of your house.

Your family deserves nothing but the best flatware at the dining table. Always keep in mind that quality must always be preferred over good appearance or low cost.

It is a fact though that the use of mortar and pestle still brings out a distinctly strong aroma and taste that is different from using modern gadgets.

By nature Mexican salsas are supposed to be hot and spicy. So if you don’t like spicy food be wary of that and make changes accordingly. The authentic Mexican Salsas are actually not all that hot. You could consider adding a serrano and a couple of chilli peppers and that will be enough. Some people use green tomatoes instead of the customary tomatillos, but believe me, the two are different and the latter has a husk around it .

Many of the ingredients used to make salsa are often roasted in an open fire. These days majority of roasting is done by means of an outdoor grill or using a oven. Grilling your ingredients will also make it easier for you to peel your ingredients. Do take into account though that you should not wash your tomatoes and peppers whilst peeling. The water can rinse away part of the taste that has been derived by way of the grilling process.
