Make The Most Of Any Kitchen Space

13 March, 2010 (06:13) | Food | By: Lance Baker

If you are one of those people who spend a lot of time cooking for your family, a well organized kitchen is essential. We have a few tips here that will make life easier for you, and your kitchen a far more attractive one.

We all have counter space, they are essential in any kitchen, there just never seems to be enough when we are cooking for a lot of people or are having a baking session. The best thing you can do if you have limited counter space is to keep it clean and clutter free.

So much valuable space is taken up with appliances and gadgets. You can get these to fit beneath the counters, so get these if you can. You’ll see plenty of space freed up instantly once you place them away from your counter tops.

Your drawer should always be properly organized and tidy do that you can just put your hand on whatever you need. Keep flatware and knives separate to avoid any possible injury.

Okay knives, we need good knives to cut and chop etc. I always recommend that you invest in a good set that are on a stand or in a block. They don’t take up much room and stay sharp and at hand.

When is a pan not a pan? When your food doesn’t cook evenly in it and you can’t get it clean! The choice of pots and pans available is staggering so ensure that you get the best ones for your usage.

Also make sure that you have enough pans to cook with, as there’s nothing worse than not having enough and end up doing something in the microwave oven.

Any gadget that cuts down on preparation time is ok by me. I am a professional cook and know how laborious food prepping can be. You want to get the actual cooking part as soon as possible.

Who Invented The Conventional Microwave Oven

24 February, 2010 (07:58) | Food | By: Mike Keeler

One of the greatest kitchen appliances ever developed is the microwave oven. Indeed, it’s hard to think of a kitchen appliance that is so versatile. You can use it for everything from boiling water to reheating cooked foods to thawing, baking and even heating water. Did you ever wonder who invented this little kitchen god?

Dr Percy Spencer was an engineer working at Raytheon Corporation. In 1946, he was heading a research project about radars. While he was working on the project and a new vacuum tube ‘magnetron’, he found that the candy bar in his pocket had melted due to the heat produced.

Astounded with what he found, he began to conduct other experiments. While he placed some popcorn kernels near the tube and stood a few feet away, Dr. Spencer saw the kernels popping and sputtering all over the lab.

In yet another experiment, he placed an egg near the magnetron tube and asked another colleague to witness what happened with him. The egg, reacting to the application of extreme pressure, began to tremble. The temperature inside the egg caused the egg to explode, sending yoke all over the lab.

Due to extreme pressure the egg began to shake. The heat inside the egg rose so much that it exploded. The yolk was scattered all over his colleagues face. Thus they realized that other food articles can be cooked using low density microwave energy.

After a lot of research work Dr. Spencer created a metal box and the box was connected to microwave power. It was designed in such a way when the door of the box was opened the microwave power will heat the inside of the box and when the door was closed, the heat created will be retained inside. This was enough to cook the food that Dr.Spencer had placed inside, within seconds. That was the first time food was cooked in a microwave oven.

Further, the food engineers worked on this technology to develop the idea further. In 1946, a company called Raytheon filed a patent for using microwave to cook food. Thus , similar to what Dr. Spencer had created, the redeveloped product was first put in Boston restaurant for testing and it was a huge success.

In 1947, therefore, the first microwave ovens were introduced to the general public. These first units were substantially larger than the ones we have today, weighing in excess of 750 pounds and measuring six feet in height. Moreover, at $5,000 a pop, they weren’t exactly a low-ticket item. The first microwaves also had to be water-cooled, so that meant that scientists had to augment them with plumbing fixtures.

The Chinese had a crude boiling pot made out of bamboo and clay.

At some point in time thousand of years ago the technique of pottery was developed. This changed cooking forever. Now suddenly pots and pans of all shapes and sizes that were portable could be made. They had a ceramic glaze applied to them so as to make them water proof. With clay pots cooking or steaming become very easy.

The History Of Kitchen Shears

25 January, 2010 (06:52) | Food | By: Alexander Stone

Shears are basically another name for scissors. A type of scissor that is generally intended for a specific use. Some shears are to trim the hair on a sheep and others for cuisine such as preparing chicken or turkey. Other types of sheers include pruning sheers used in the garden, tin snipers for cutting thin sheets of metal to name a few.

Another difference of sheers compared to scissors is that, because they are designed for heavier use they are generally stronger in construction and better suited for the types of work that they are intended for. The thickness of the blades is usually a bit more and they are generally a little longer than scissors.

Some of the other differences with scissors include a fulcrum that is placed differently in order give it a better leverage while cutting which makes cutting easier. Many types of sheers come with removable blades which mean you can just replace the blades rather than buying new pairs.

The use of scissors goes back to the ancient Egyptians who used a crude version of the tool, much later in 1761 British gentlemen named Robert hinchliffe made a pair that is very similar to the modern scissors. It did very well in the market which led to it being mass produced. As time went by scissors became works of art in the hands of crafts men.

The 20th century saw a lot of design changes done to the scissor, with a whole new variety for different tasks came into the market. They are called shears instead of scissors, because the geometry and use changed with each design. Kitchen shears are designed to perform relatively difficult tasks such as cutting poultry. They are also designed with south paws in mind and also ambidextrous models.

To ease your confusion relating to which Sabatier knives are authentic (sold by knife makers from the Thiers district and having a lineage dating back to at least the 19th century) and which could be inexpensive knock-offs (made in China and other countries), strive to check for these manufacturer’s names: ETS Sabatier An & Perrier, Thiers Issard Sabatier and the Sabatier Diamant, among others. Or, you can always inspect for the “Made in France” stamp.

Product Features

With quite a few types of Sabatier knife sets on the market, you should stick to the authentic kinds presuming you want to get acceptable value for your honest money. Let’s take for instance the cultery of ETS Sabatier An & Perrier that markets the brand name Sabatier-K.

The manufacturer markets six series that are naturally in French – Authentique, Au Carbone Vintage, Bellevue, Proxus, Auvergne and Elegance. Nearly all of the blades are fully forged, a designation which means that the blade, bolster and tang are forged out of the same sheet of steel. Full forging provides a more robust and smoother knife with a perfect weight and balance for simple cutting.

Advantages

Unless you are going for the cheaper imitations, you may purchase Sabatier knife sets made by hand from fully-forged high-carbon steel. The handles will be found in steel or wood, and the knives will come with a slotted wood display stand. Predictably, the copycats will also have the great looking handles and display block, however you will certainly pay for weaker and duller blades.

Additionally, the Sabatier-K brand knives can be personalized. This company’s blades are of such good craftsmanship that you may even give them to a Cordon Bleu graduate or beginning restaurant owner who can fully appreciate and display them.

Disadvantages

Well, there is just one notable disadvantage with Sabatier knives. Thanks to numerous merchants affixing the name on nearly any Sabatier knife produced, this purchase should never be done lightly. Novice consumers who only would like to purchase knives for normal prep work ought to do some homework ahead of time to be sure their knives offer the quality and performance they want to invest in.

When you come to think of it, though, a knife is simply as good as the chef who uses it. So, as a result, an authentic Sabatier knife could come with all the advantages of the highest quality knives in the world, but when wielded by a careless amateur, it could just as well be fashioned from wood.
