After the Revolutionary War, American makers sprung up in New Jersey and New York, creating attractive sets along with even butter churns and tobacco pipes.

Eventually, the non-porous nature of the basic material proved to be a stable platform for the addition of glossy and attractive glazes. This included a sought-after dark brown offering known as Albany Slip. The late 1800s saw many different glazes being created, which gave rise to one of the 20th century’s most popular forms, the Bristol glaze. It’s still valued to this day, by the way.

These days, antique and vintage stoneware dinner sets have become popular collectibles. Prices will of course vary and depends upon the sizes of the dinner set pieces and the old pottery making company that produced the sets. The kinds of glazing and decorations also play a role in determining how collectible they’ll be as well. A good place to look for such items is in the catalogs of many New England antique stores, by the way.

Who Invented The Conventional Microwave Oven

One of the greatest kitchen appliances ever developed is the microwave oven. Indeed, it’s hard to think of a kitchen appliance that is so versatile. You can use it for everything from boiling water to reheating cooked foods to thawing, baking and even heating water. Did you ever wonder who invented this little kitchen god?

Dr Percy Spencer was an engineer working at Raytheon Corporation. In 1946, he was heading a research project about radars. While he was working on the project and a new vacuum tube ‘magnetron’, he found that the candy bar in his pocket had melted due to the heat produced.

Astounded with what he found, he began to conduct other experiments. While he placed some popcorn kernels near the tube and stood a few feet away, Dr. Spencer saw the kernels popping and sputtering all over the lab.

In yet another experiment, he placed an egg near the magnetron tube and asked another colleague to witness what happened with him. The egg, reacting to the application of extreme pressure, began to tremble. The temperature inside the egg caused the egg to explode, sending yoke all over the lab.

Due to extreme pressure the egg began to shake. The heat inside the egg rose so much that it exploded. The yolk was scattered all over his colleagues face. Thus they realized that other food articles can be cooked using low density microwave energy.

After a lot of research work Dr. Spencer created a metal box and the box was connected to microwave power. It was designed in such a way when the door of the box was opened the microwave power will heat the inside of the box and when the door was closed, the heat created will be retained inside. This was enough to cook the food that Dr.Spencer had placed inside, within seconds. That was the first time food was cooked in a microwave oven.

Further, the food engineers worked on this technology to develop the idea further. In 1946, a company called Raytheon filed a patent for using microwave to cook food. Thus , similar to what Dr. Spencer had created, the redeveloped product was first put in Boston restaurant for testing and it was a huge success.

In 1947, therefore, the first microwave ovens were introduced to the general public. These first units were substantially larger than the ones we have today, weighing in excess of 750 pounds and measuring six feet in height. Moreover, at $5,000 a pop, they weren’t exactly a low-ticket item. The first microwaves also had to be water-cooled, so that meant that scientists had to augment them with plumbing fixtures.

Cook ware is any type utensil that is used for the process of cooking food. Cookware can come in any shape or size depending on the need of the moment. Every culture since the beginning of time has used some form of cooking utensil to cook their food.

Back in the Stone Age meat was cooked on a open fire. The branches of trees were used to hold the meat on the fire while it roasted. So the tree branch or the stick was the first known cooking “utensil”. Meat was cooked that way and there is no proof that any other food item was cooked that way. Cooking food like this continued until ancient humans discovered that cooking food in boiling water was also an option.

The earliest known boiling vessels were made out of animal shells and large woks carved out of stone. Animal shells were treated with mud on one side so that it could resist the heat of the fire and boil water at the same time. The ancient American Indians used carved stone to cook food. The Chinese had a crude boiling pot made out of bamboo and clay.

At some point in time thousand of years ago the technique of pottery was developed. This changed cooking forever. Now suddenly pots and pans of all shapes and sizes that were portable could be made. They had a ceramic glaze applied to them so as to make them water proof. With clay pots cooking or steaming become very easy.

In this day and age cookware has come a long way with so many different designs and materials used to manufacture various cook wares. But there is a cookware that has been used for centuries that is still in use today and that is the steamer basket. The ancient designs were made out of bamboo, and today they are available in stainless steel or aluminum.

When choosing a kettle you may come across many different designs and colours. In terms of features there are those that are ecorfriendly. For decades, dinner time in the USA meant one thing. Sitting around a kitchen table with your family (and perhaps a few friends), and enjoying a tasty meal together. Although it is a far rarer event these days, it’s still a great way to enjoy some great conversation, and a nice way to welcome in the evening hours.

In this article we will be exploring the world of a major aspect of these family dinners, the dinner set. We will be providing a bit of history, and time permitting, go into some of the finer sets available, and where you might be able to obtain them.

Civilizations of the ancient world were often identified by the pottery that they created. Archaeologists would often find these items buried in the various sites that they would be combing through. It’s interesting to note that people often valued these items so much that they went so far as to be buried with them.

Sometimes people will refer to dinnerware as “China”. Ever wonder why? It’s because years ago dinnerware was made from porcelain, and porcelain making was invented by the Chinese over 1000 years ago. Logical answer, eh? Probably invented by the Tang Dynasty, but the emperors of the Song Dynasty seem to be taking most of the credit for it. Half way through the Song Dynasty, around 1100 AD, the process of porcelain making was being circulated throughout the East. By the time the 1400’s AD had rolled around, this knowledge had made its way to Europe.

Importing fine dinnerware from China was very expensive. As a result, only those who were rich could afford to own it. No worries…a solution was on the way. The Europeans started to create their own “China” factories. Modifying the process a bit (they incorporated a different mixture of clays, etc.), it resulted in a softer China, one that had a duller tone than the similar products that were being imported from China. Around the year 1700 another form of China was starting to emerge onto the scene. It was called “Bone China”, and it was made from a mixture of both bone ash and porcelain clays.

A great deal of the collectable and valuable dinnerware that we have circulating today is made out of pottery, not porcelain. It is sometimes referred to as “earthenware”. These items were very popular during the 1950’s and 1960’s.

What’s the most widely used pottery today? Stoneware is the answer. If you look around it seems to be everywhere. Check out the stores, the restaurants, the hotels and various homes. It’s all around us. Stoneware is made by firing the item at a very high temperature until it’s completely solid, and can therefore hold liquids. The process to create Stoneware was developed in the same place as the process for creating porcelain…China, about 3500 years ago. Some of the most collectable pieces of Stoneware in today’s world were created in the mid 1800’s in the Virginia and New England areas of the United States.

This is to say they only work in Keurig’s K-Cup brewers. So, if you are looking for regular coffee pods, stop right there, because you won’t find any such offerings from Green Mountain. Green Mountain Coffee Is Quite Green

With a name like green mountain, you would think that the company was rather old and from Ireland or something. In reality, Green Mountain Coffee was founded in Vermont in 1981. This makes them very new to the coffee world, especially with older companies having been around since the mid 1800s. The company actually started as a tiny cafe in rural Waitsfield, Vermont, where they roasted and served coffee. It didn’t take long before local restaurants began clamoring to buy Green Mountain Coffee to serve in their own establishments.

What Makes Green Mountain Special?

Green Mountain Coffees managed to grow very quickly in an extremely competitive industry. How were they able to distinguish themselves? Well, there’s a myriad of reasons they’re different, but let’s focus on flavors and selections. Green Mountain Coffees does not try to compete with the big guys whose bread and butter is traditional and decaf type offerings. They do provide a French roast, a breakfast blend, and their “Our Blend”, that all of the coffee shops in Vermont were begging for at one point, but they also have a ton of unique offerings. At the time of this writing, Green Mountain Coffees produced more than 100 different coffees under a handful of labels.

Will Green Mountain Coffees Work In My Pod Coffee Maker?

Since Green Mountain Coffee makes only Keurig K-Cups, they’re not going to fit in the standard coffee pod brewer. Green Mountain likely won’t ever make a normal coffee pod, as you would find in the Home Cafe system, so the standard coffee pod machine will probably remain out of luck. This is because, a few years ago, Green Mountain Coffees actually bought Keurig. It’s quite likely that this is the whole reason that K-Cups have been such a hit, even though they’re different from normal pod coffee makers. If you’re really bent on making it work, or if you just enjoy making your own coffee pods, you could always purchase Green Mountain’s loose coffee and do it that way.

Other Green Mountain Products

Green Mountain does have products other than coffees, although only a few actually bear the Green Mountain Coffee label. Under the Celestial Seasonings label, they offer various teas, while under the Cafe Escapes label, there are a few different types of hot chocolate. None of these offerings are available as anything other than K-Cups, however.

Is there anything better that enjoying a warm bowl of rich soup on a cold day? The tastes, the textures, the endless varieties, and let’s not forget the comfort food factor. While soups are often thought of as a wintertime food, there’s no reason they can’t be a year-round favorite. Many of the heartier soups can be a complete meal. And for the hottest days, you can always switch to chilled soup if you prefer. Below are some of are some of the basics about the types of soups you can make.

It’s interesting that most soups can be broken down into a few categories, basically that there are soups that begin with or without a stock base. Then there are also the fruit soups. Some examples of soups requiring stock include your broths, bouillon, and consomm. Soups without stock would be bisque, chowders, creams, and purees.

If you’re making your own stock, you can choose to make it meat or vegetable based. Meats often used are beef, lamb, turkey, chicken, veal, and fish. If you use dark color meat such as beef you will end up with the darker, brown color stock while your lighter meats such as fish and poultry will result in a white, clearer soup stock. Vegetables favored for flavoring stock are typically celery, onion, and carrots. These based are most commonly used for soups like tomato, cabbage, chicken, beef, vegetable soup, and broth’s.

If you’re making a rich thick puree or cream type soup you’ll find they can be a perfect main course for a light dinner or afternoon luncheon. Create such classics as creamed corn or creamed broccoli, split pea, oyster or lobster bisque, bean or potato puree, clam chowder, and much more.
