10 Steps For Cooking-Up Family Memories

31 August, 2010 (05:58) | Recipes | By: Alfred Lancer

The kitchen is the perfect place for making memories. When you spend time baking, cooking and enjoying meals with your family, you create happy memories you and your children will cherish forever.

The benefits of preparing and enjoying food as a family are clear. You save money and eat healthier meals. You create opportunities to connect and communicate with your children and spouse. And most importantly, you show love for your family when you spend time cooking and eating with them. Children of all ages need your attention and your time. By working together to create a meal or bake a batch of cookies, you spend valuable time together.

So, here are 10 steps to get your family cooking up memories.

Step 1: Teach small children the fun of cooking by helping them bake cookies and cakes. If you are short on time, you can use a boxed cookie mix and spend more time decorating.

Step 2: Encourage the littlest ones to play pretend cooking. Kids love to play with real mixing bowls, strainers and wooden spoons. These make harmless toys and can be easily thrown in the dishwasher for quick cleanup.

Step 3: If you live by your day-timer, schedule in baking cookies with your kids. Our schedules can be so hectic that something as simple as baking a batch of chocolate chip cookies can get skipped over. Write it down and do it.

Step 4: If you have teenagers, let them play their favorite music while they wash the lettuce and set the table.

Step 5: Work together with your spouse to prepare the dinner and use the time to catch up on each other’s day.

Step 6: Even if you are in a rush preparing dinner, remember to reduce your stress and focus on creating a fun atmosphere that naturally encourages the whole family to participate.

Step 7: When spending time preparing food with your children, include lessons about healthy eating choices. Keep the conversation positive and avoid listing foods they can’t have.

Step 8: On days where you anticipate time will be tight, consider taking a short cut by using a frozen stir-fry mix or pasta with a jar of pre-made sauce. Your family will appreciate your relaxed mood much more than a made-from-scratch dinner.

Step 9: Share the job of grocery shopping. One week have mom take one of the children as a helper, the next week dad can go with another child. Always work from a grocery list and let your children help you retrieve items and cross them off the list.

Step 10: Have big family meals where you share about your day. Keep the conversation fun and avoid negative lectures over dinner. Remember to laugh.

Take these steps today and make your kitchen a fun and memorable place for your whole family.

16 June, 2010 (06:53) | Recipes | By: Eric Cook

During the summer we prefer cool deserts, but as fall and winter approach, our taste buds want something warm from the oven. There are several other deserts that use the same idea, although the pastry crust may be somewhat different. All of these deserts make up some great comfort foods that help to keep your body warm and satisfied. The crust for a typical apple crisp uses a mixture that works up very much like a streusel. Most toppings contain a combination that includes sugar, flour, butter, oatmeal and may include nuts for additional flavor.

One of the good things about apple crisps is that they are the perfect desert for when the apples begin to get ripe on the trees. Fresh apples make the best apple crisps. One of the best choices is the Granny Smith apple that has a green skin and is very tart. Ice cream makes a wonderful topping for a warm apple crisp. If you want your desert to have extra flavor and color, try adding berries such as raspberries or cranberries to the apple crisp. For the English version, blackberries are a favorite addition.

Try using old fashioned rolled oats that are larger in size than the quick cooking oats. They will give the topping a better texture and a better flavor. Oatmeal can be found very inexpensively in the bulk food aisle of your grocery store. Old fashioned oats make a higher quality apple crisp.

Oats are a whole grain cereal that are very good for you. They can help to lower your cholesterol and are a great source of fiber. Add the fiber of the oats to the fiber of the apples and you have a desert that is both good for you and tastes great.

Normally it will take 1/2 to 3/4 teaspoon of each of the spices, but adjust to taste. Mix these toppings until they form a crumbly mixture and spread over the apples.

Bake your apple crisp for thirty minutes in an oven that has been preheated to 375 degrees. When the apples are tender, the crisp is done.

Save Money By Using Homemade Deer Repellent

7 June, 2010 (04:44) | Recipes | By: Tad Distin

The process of keeping deer away from the yard can sometimes seem like a never-ending battle. No matter how high the fence, a hungry deer will leap over to enjoy a nice meal. Though no form of deer deterrent is totally effective, a method like homemade deer repellent is an easy and cost-saving way to encourage deer to snack somewhere else.

Garden centers and online stores sell repellents made from chemical and organic ingredients. There are also effective repellents that can be made at home at a fraction of the cost. Whether hung throughout the yard or sprayed directly on plants, they are usually quite successful at deterring deer.

Hanging cloves of garlic, strands of human hair, or soap from trees in back yard will prevent deer from approaching the area. These items are forms of area repellents, which deter deer from entering the location in which they are displayed, as their name implies. Area repellents have an effectiveness period of about a month after which time they will need to be replaced.

Contact repellents are applied to the foliage and flowers in order to discourage deer from taking a nibble. The ingredients in contact repellents are things like rotten milk, eggs, and onions. When the mixtures dry on the leaves, the smell emitted by most of these ingredients will disappear. However, the taste will still be unappealing enough to prevent deer from chewing on treated items more than once. These treatments are very effective but require frequent reapplication, especially after a lot of rain.

Do some library and online research regarding deer repellent recipes and you will find many. One that is recommended by many experts is a mixture of three tablespoons each of minced garlic or garlic juice and hot sauce, combined with three raw eggs. Blend these ingredients with a bit of water, then add the resulting mixture to one-gallon water and spray on the foliage.

Another common recipe uses ingredients that everyone should already have at home. Mixing an egg with one-quarter cup of water and then spraying this on the plants will be effective. The egg will stick to the leaves, enabling the deterrent to withstand a light rain. For treating large areas, mix two gallons of water with two eggs, two tablespoons cooking oil, and two tablespoons of liquid detergent. Pour this into a spray bottle and treat the plants.

Using homemade deer repellent will deter deer from the home’s landscape and will cost the homeowner very little money to make. Use an area repellent such as bars of soap around the garden. Test out several contact repellent recipes until the most effective version is found. These all-natural methods of deterring deer are safe and effective.

One of the many ways people who are struggling with keeping the deer away from their gardens is to make deer repellent recipes and use them in their garden. You can find many home made deer repellents on our site as well as the best deer repellent in the market… Deer Guard. Deer Guard is tested and approved by the National Home Gardening Club.

1. Don’t make candies on rainy days. For high humidity does not allow the candy to harden. The candy might still taste good but it will surely be sticky. Sticky candies are not that fun to eat, right?

2. Use cooking vessels which are heavy and of good quality. For your information, cheap pots don’t heat evenly which often result to an inconsistent final product. I recommend Copper bottom pots for they are particularly good.

3. Cook candy at an exact and appropriate heat. Remember, if you are stirring the praline mixture, keep the temperature high. Once the candy starts to bubble you, reduce the heat to medium. Let it cook a bit but you still need to stir it frequently.
