This special scrumptious recipe has its origins in Persia. The story goes that the tribals and nomads carried lots of dried meat and rice with them while they traveled, and they layered the rice and the meat and added some dry herbs and nuts and allow it to seethe on a wood fire for for a while and then buried it in the sand for a few hours, following which the dish was deemed ready. It was a fairly straightforward form of preparing Biryani those days, utilizing nature and her resources.

Nowadays there are numerous forms of Biryani prepared using a lot of diverse cooking styles. There are probably more than a hundred varieties of Biryani prepared using various combinations of meat and vegetables.

Biryani has meat and rice as its central ingredients. The rest of the ingredients, vary depending on the variety and style of the Biryani being cooked.

There are many varieties of Biryani within India with each city having its own style, but perhaps Biryani from Hyderabad is the most famous of the lot. Believe it or not, a few of the biryani recipes are intensely guarded by restaurants and families across generations. Biryani was infact introduced to India by the Mughals which was then improvised by the local Indians to suit their spice craving.

A great Biryani consists of nicely cooked meat and the right blend of herbs and spices, cooked together with rice. The Rice and Meat is never mixed while cooking. They are both cooked separately. 10 Steps For Cooking-Up Family Memories

31 August, 2010 (05:58) | Recipes | By: Alfred Lancer

The kitchen is the perfect place for making memories. When you spend time baking, cooking and enjoying meals with your family, you create happy memories you and your children will cherish forever.

The benefits of preparing and enjoying food as a family are clear. You save money and eat healthier meals. You create opportunities to connect and communicate with your children and spouse. And most importantly, you show love for your family when you spend time cooking and eating with them. Children of all ages need your attention and your time. By working together to create a meal or bake a batch of cookies, you spend valuable time together.

So, here are 10 steps to get your family cooking up memories.

Step 1: Teach small children the fun of cooking by helping them bake cookies and cakes. If you are short on time, you can use a boxed cookie mix and spend more time decorating.

Step 2: Encourage the littlest ones to play pretend cooking. Kids love to play with real mixing bowls, strainers and wooden spoons. These make harmless toys and can be easily thrown in the dishwasher for quick cleanup.

Step 3: If you live by your day-timer, schedule in baking cookies with your kids. Our schedules can be so hectic that something as simple as baking a batch of chocolate chip cookies can get skipped over. Write it down and do it.

Step 4: If you have teenagers, let them play their favorite music while they wash the lettuce and set the table.

Step 5: Work together with your spouse to prepare the dinner and use the time to catch up on each other’s day.

Step 6: Even if you are in a rush preparing dinner, remember to reduce your stress and focus on creating a fun atmosphere that naturally encourages the whole family to participate.

Step 7: When spending time preparing food with your children, include lessons about healthy eating choices. Keep the conversation positive and avoid listing foods they can’t have.

Step 8: On days where you anticipate time will be tight, consider taking a short cut by using a frozen stir-fry mix or pasta with a jar of pre-made sauce. Your family will appreciate your relaxed mood much more than a made-from-scratch dinner.

Step 9: Share the job of grocery shopping. One week have mom take one of the children as a helper, the next week dad can go with another child. Always work from a grocery list and let your children help you retrieve items and cross them off the list.

Step 10: Have big family meals where you share about your day. Keep the conversation fun and avoid negative lectures over dinner. Remember to laugh.

Take these steps today and make your kitchen a fun and memorable place for your whole family.

Healthy Recipes: Advice On How To Include A Healthy Diet

29 August, 2010 (03:08) | Recipes | By: Prem Kapur

1. It helps to plan ahead. This is where your dry erase board comes in handy. One could purchase boards that have monthly or weekly calendars printed on them. If yours doesn’t, that’s okay. You could just list the days down the side or draw your own weekly calendar on it with permanent marker so it doesn’t wipe off.

When setting up your dinners for the week, bear in mind any nights you will be busy or getting home late and plan the quickest meals for then. Also remember, any perishables you will need to make use of that week, and plan your meals to incorporate them. Soups and casseroles are a wonderful way to utilize veggies that are starting to wilt. You could also make sure you have everything on hand to prepare your meals for the week, cutting down on last minute trips to the grocery store.

2. When preparing healthy recipes, the focus ought to be on vegetables. Avoid oils, cream sauces, or using a lot of dairy products or meat. Healthy proteins such as beans or tofu can replace meat in a lot meals. In your favorite recipes, consider healthy substitutions where possible. Some examples are:

Sugar free applesauce can be complemented with oil to lessen the amount of oil overall. Cook with healthier oils such as olive or canola. Ideally throw away the yellow part of an egg and only use the egg white Flour and whole wheat pasta are good healthy foods Avoid fatty dairy products. Use 2% skim milk only. If a recipe needs lots of cream think about using powdered no-fat milk paste. Utilize low sodium options when available. Employ brown rice as opposed to white rice. Think meat as a side dish at best instead of a main dish and ideally try to avoid meat atleast 3 days a week..

3. Choose recipes that can be made with healthy, quick cooking methods. A stir-fry only takes a few minutes to prepare. You could stir-fry vegetables and meats or tofu in a tablespoon of canola oil for merely a some time and then use them to top rice or whole wheat or buckwheat noodles. Steaming is another healthy method of cooking. There are microwave steamers available that make it possible to enjoy steamed veggies with just a push of the button. Other healthy cooking methods are broiling, grilling, and braising.

Also consider uncooked meals for the fastest preparation. Salads, sandwiches and wraps are nourishing and only take a few minutes.

4. Do as much preparation as possible ahead of time. When you buy healthy meats, such as chicken, cook it all at once using a healthy method, then freeze it in meal sized portions. If most of your favorite recipes call for chopped veggies, chop the entire onion at once then store. You only have to grab some or thaw out the container, then assemble when it is time to cook. By using your dry erase board to plan meals beforehand, you will be able to check the night before to see what must be pulled from the freezer to thaw for tomorrow’s dinner.

5. Keep track of recipes everyone in the family enjoy and jot them in your private cookbook. You could gather recipes in a file and jot down experiments that did the trick and have them available when you feel uninspired. If you make substitutions, remember to note it on the recipe so you’ll remember next time. After you prepare a recipe in your binder, make a note of anything you wish to do differently next time and the time it took you to make it. This can help you when you plan future meals.

Plan Healthy Meals That Are Fun For Kids

24 August, 2010 (06:22) | Recipes | By: Angela Tyler

Is getting your kids to eat healthy foods a battle in your home? If so, you’ll love these tips that will make your kids happy and give you the satisfaction of knowing you are feeding them foods that are good and healthy. Let’s take a look at fun and healthy eating throughout the day:

Start with Breakfast – Feed your kids a healthy breakfast by replacing those prepackaged cereals, pastries, and bars with something better. These processed foods contain lots of sugar and unidentifiable ingredients from biology class. That includes those so-called healthy breakfast or protein bars.

Instead, mix up a batch of whole grain pancakes at night and stick them in the refrigerator. Pop them in the microwave in the morning and serve with an assortment of smashed berries for toppings. Or, take whole wheat tortillas and wrap up a breakfast burrito with healthy food choices like scrambled eggs, cheese, and turkey bacon, or even make a fruit wrap. Tuck this burrito inside a parchment paper roll and you’ve got a breakfast-to-go that’s fun and healthy.

Got to Have a Snack – Most kids prefer sweets when they’re looking for a snack. Give them sweets like applesauce and homemade oatmeal cookies so you control the sugar. When you make your cookies, substitute honey for sugar. Fruit snacks and Fruit Roll Ups that are made from 100% fruit juice are great ways to give your kids healthy snacks.

Fresh fruit juice is a delicious substitute for those sugary fruit punch drinks. You can even cut the expense by adding a little water to the fruit juice. Poured over ice and your kids will think they have a grownup drink and won’t even notice the lack of sugar. Say NO to all sodas by serving flavored tonic water with a pretty slice of fruit for garnish. This is a sparkly drink that your kids will grow quite attached to and never miss the soda again.

Time for Lunch – If you’re looking for lunch ideas for school or home, you want foods that are filling, healthy, and fast. Your kids have a busy day and so do you. With a few lunch time tricks, you can have your kids fed quickly and with healthy foods. Examine some of your kids favorite foods and make the same dishes with healthier ingredients.

Make a healthier batch of macaroni and cheese easily by using whole wheat pasta, skim milk, and low fat cheese. Your kids will fall in love with their new favorite mac and cheese; no boxes involved. If chicken nuggets are a favorite lunchtime treat, simply cut up chicken breasts into small pieces, roll in egg and milk, then crushed cornflakes, and bake in the oven on a cookie sheet until crispy.

Dinner Bell is Ringing – At the end of a busy day, your kids want a big meal. You can make a routine dinner of baked chicken, mashed potatoes, and beans, but that may not appeal to a youngster. Get your kids involved with the meal planning and see what they come up with. You want to look for kid-tested menus that you can make healthy.

A great place to start is with homemade pizza. Choose healthy toppings and let your kids create their own personal pizza. You can even use flattened biscuits or tacos to create individual pizzas so each child can have their own favorite toppings. Tacos are another fun way to let kids get creative.
