Abiding Islamic Dietary Laws – Halal On Restaurants And Food Tags

9 March, 2010 (03:40) | Uncategorized | By: Mariah West

Many of us have seen the term “halal,” but not many of us know what it means. Halal can be seen on food labels and eateries. The term is important for our Muslim friends as it shows what is permitted for them to eat by their Islamic dietary law. In a country with inhabitants of different religions, the term halal is very important.

For Muslim-populated states, seeing halal on food products and eateries is no trouble at all since they are run by Muslims who follow Islamic rules. But for areas that have citizens practicing different faiths, then halal is not that easy to come by. Luckily, more and more establishments are becoming conscious of their customers’ orientations.

Halal means lawful or legal. If a food label has this word on or a restaurant claims they are halal-certified, it means that the preparation of their food is in accordance with the Islamic dietary law, and therefore, they are allowed to consume the items.

Just what are permitted in Islamic law? For meat , the mode in which an animal should be killed must be swift. When killing an animal, its windpipe and gullet must be cut and done quickly.

If halal means legal, haraam is the reverse. Muslims are not allowed to have haraam products, such as intoxicant and pork. A halal-certified eatery and a halal-approved food item should not contain such ingredients. Also, they should be careful withhow they make the food, avoiding any contamination. If a spoon was already used for a meal with haraam ingredients, it should not be used any longer to make halal-approved products.

Other haraam items include blood, carnivores or birds of prey, animals slaughtered in the name of any other god but Allah or have been consecrated to another idol, and corpse of an animal.

Halal-certified restaurants should conform to the Islamic dietary laws. And because some items are difficult to determine whether they are halal or not, there are Muslim groups who certify food items as halal for consumers. Those products with halal certification are used as ingredients by halal eateries, just to make very sure that they are carefully following the laws.

It’s good to know that there are eateries not run by Muslims that still take a great effort to abide Islamic dietary laws. It only means that they value all their clients and honor their orientations and faiths.

Ways To Make Sinful Desserts Healthier To Eat

25 February, 2010 (09:16) | Food | By: Jeremiah Richardson

Admit it, you are tempted. And who wouldn’t? The look of desserts is enticing enough, how much more if you taste them? But for some reasons, you hold yourself from sinking your teeth into one soft, succulent dark chocolate cake. You know that a bite of that lush, decadent piece wouldn’t be adequate and would wreck your hard work at the gym. And you wonder, is there any way you can eat sweets without adding a pound or two on the scale?

Well, you can and you cannot.

The answer is vague because there’s no specific answer. What is effective for some wouldn’t work for the others. If there are those who can consume a whole slice of fruit tart without worrying the fat on his/her thighs, there are those who aren’t so fortunate. But for those who love dessert so much, that is not sufficient. So to give us dessert lovers a little peace of mind, since we just can’t avoid them as much as we would like to, let’s try to make sweets a little healthier for us.

To start with, eat a healthy meal before taking your dessert. It just wouldn’t do if your main lunch and dessert are both unhealthy. At least make your meal as healthy as possible so you can reward yourself with a decadently fine sweet later.

If you are going to prepare your own dessert, then include lots of healthy ingredients. Fill it with more healthy items like fruits over less nutritious ones like sugar. If you are buying the dessert, look for those with more healthy ingredients. Also, look for marks with “low fat,” “low calorie,” “no fat,” etc. It’s like taking sweets and deceiving calories at the same time.

Take your dessert in small portions. Have you seen those chic desserts served at restaurants and bakeshops? They are like the Mini-Me’s of a whole cake but they are actually less than a regular cut. They look great, though, and still very appetizing. Try to eat yours in those petite sizes. They still taste the same, but you are just eating an average portion.

Lastly, consume those decadent sweets only during special affairs. I’m not saying that you should entirely shun desserts during ordinary days, but save those really unhealthy but chocolatey and calorific ones during special days. It would just make special affairs more special. During common days, choose desserts that doesn’t present risks to your health, like fruits in parfait or yogurt and fruit salad. They still have the goodness and sweetness of desserts without the guilt trip.

Just like a good book, a meal isn’t done without a sweet closing. You may have just had the heartiest feast in your life or the not-so-special dinner, but a meal isn’t finished without desserts.

Western Food Fare In The Land Down Under

25 February, 2010 (06:54) | Food | By: Bailey Wagner

When people hear Western food, they automatically think of Texas and cowboys. Not always so. Western food is a term mostly referred to the food in Europe and Western nations, including Australia, which has one of the most diverse cultures in the world. When it comes to the culinary field, the Land Down Under is very multicultural, bearing Western cuisine and other influences.

Western fare in Australia is very rampant. As most in the nation’s account is based on traditional British fare brought by the first British colonists, one can find steaks, hams, and more a regular in the food scene.

Morning meals in Australia is alike to breakfast in various Western countries. A light fare generally consists of toast, fruits, and cereals, while a heavier meal is alike to a total English breakfast of sausage, hash browns, eggs, and bacon. For the drinks, it may include milk, juice, coffee, or tea.

Lunch and dinner in Down Under is mostly very Western-like. Although meals differ according to the family’s background, general selections include roast meat, pasta, pizza, casseroles, vegetables, and barbecue. Viewed outback food includes steaks, grilled rib-eye, and lamb chops among others.

For take-away snacks, Australia has a wide selection of take-away food, just like any other Western nations. Fish and chips is a favorite snack that is associated with the country and other Western nations such as England and the U.S. Hamburgers, sausage rolls, meat pies, are typically ordered to be taken outside an eatery.

Also popular in Australia are American fast food eateries, such as Pizza Hut, KFC, McDonald’s, and Subway.

There are foods that keep its Australian touch while considered as Western at the same time, such as the popular breakfast item Vegemite, a salty toast spread; pavlova cake and ANZAC biscuits; both of which are also being claimed as New Zealand creations; kangaroo meat; and meat pies.

Because the country is greatly influenced and formed by its first British colonists, Western food in Australia, a former British colony, is very rampant and established to this day. The country’s culinary scene is shaped by its colonists and dwellers while still staying genuine to its native taste.

Exciting Coffee Cups

13 February, 2010 (09:27) | Coffee | By: Connie Parker

Who doesn’t like complimentary giveaways? Who wouldn’t be truly excited once they see that someone is giving away free coffee cups? Your display will be rocking as clients tell other clients where they got those coffee cups that are holding all the crap they got from the other displays. People will cruise right by the same key rings and pens they get at every event.

Coffee Cups Are Better

Remember trick or treating on Halloween? Well, liken the little orange and black candies that had no name to key rings and calenders. Coffee cups…those would be candy bars. The good stuff. Remember all the kids telling the other kids where to get the good stuff? Like candy, size is everything. It’s impossible to ignore something as big as a coffee cup, especially in comparison to the little flimsy pieces of plastic that are usually given away as promotional gifts. People use coffee cups all year around, too. They drink coffee from summer to winter, and they always need something to put it in. Calenders have a tendency to vanish once the client finds one he likes better.

Coffee Cups As Gifts

Speaking of seasons, during the Christmas season coffee cups make great gifts for your patrons. They’re very easy to pack and mail and, unlike a shirt with your logo, coffee cups can be used by everyone. You’ll never need to fret about purchasing different sizes of coffee cups since one size fits all. And have you ever given someone a shirt that was too big? Not pretty. Also not possible with coffee cups.

Tips On Choosing Coffee Cups

So I’m sure you’re asking; how would one go about making or procuring promotional coffee mugs? Following are a few of the things that should be considered. The most important thing to consider is the material you want to use for your coffee cups.

What Material Is Best?

There’s plenty of different types to choose from with coffee cups being made out of everything from plastic to crockery. The end product should reflect your business’s main purpose. For a company that wants to say “We’re Powerful!”, nothing beats metal cups. A company named Rose’s Roses would look rather silly with their logo on a stark metal coffee cup. Rose would probably prefer ceramic since a ceramic cup would be a bit more affectionate and personal. As ceramic is used in arts and crafts, motherly types tend to be drawn toward it. Plastic cups will show that your business is off limits to no one; anyone can benefit from being your client, regardless of their financial power.

Choosing If A One Cup Coffee Maker Is Correct For Your Home Or Office

18 January, 2010 (07:19) | Coffee | By: Oprah Menfree

Let’s imagine, or assume, that you have no coffee maker at all. Considering one cup coffee makers are nearly as common as the more traditional brewers, and they’re not even priced all that differently, you would have to make a decision. Does it make more sense to purchase a one cup coffee maker as opposed to a traditional brewer? Consider these points when making your decision.

Coffee In The Office

In an office, it’s generally assumed that a traditional brewer is going to outperform any one cup coffee maker. One can easily imagine a long line at the coffee maker early every morning. You can see where a one cup coffee maker actually might make some sense, though, if you consider how people generally drink their coffee as the day. Not everyone comes in and pours whatever happens to be in the company pot into their coffee cup, or disposable coffee cups. There are plenty of picky coffee people who will dump anything that they consider stale without a second thought. With these finicky types, a one cup coffee maker can prevent a lot of waste since the coffee is made on demand only.

One Cup Coffee Makers And Freshness

A traditional brewer will always lose the freshness contest unless you either throw away every partially used bag, or use everything that you open every day. The 1 cup coffee maker, on the other hand, specializes in this exact situation. Coffee pods are wrapped individually, so opening one won’t affect any of the others. They’re vacuum sealed and have long expiration dates, so you can store quite a few of them as well. Unless your office burns through a package of coffee, the whole thing, every day, a one cup coffee maker will always win this one. The freshness advantage is even clearer at home.

Options On The Fly

How many times have you wanted some sort of specialty coffee, but either couldn’t afford it at a coffee shop, or didn’t have time to go to one? This is one area where one cup coffee makers excel, especially T-Discs and K-Cups coffees. Both of these systems are capable of making single cups of somewhat complicated brews all by themselves. At home, this means saving a load of time and, if you like to change your coffee up a lot, you’ll save money as well. At the office, a one cup coffee maker will allow everyone to have what they want, without wasting anything.

The Cost Of A One Cup Coffee Maker

Most people still think that one cup coffee makers are still a whole lot more expensive than traditional brewers, but that’s not necessarily so. At work, they’ll probably cost more, this is true, but sometimes it’s worth it in the long run. At home, on the other hand, there may not be much of a difference in price, and if you often go to coffee shops, you might end up saving a bunch. Of course, comparing them using your own personal situation is the only real way to know which makes sense for you.
